For the March Newbies intiative, there is a requirement to perform a few tasks. The task for today is to write about setting goals.
Why set goals?
In the Mindvalley Quest Be Extraordinary, founder Vishen Lakhiani presents a model he calls The Four States of Mind. It is a typical four quadrant diagram where the horizontal axis refers to your vision for the future, and the vertical axis is current happiness.
People in the two left quadrants lack a vision of the future. If you hate your current life, then you get into a negative spiral of hopelessness. If you love your life in the present moment, that would seem to be perfect. Except that this doesn't last, and 20 years later you might look back at your life and wish you had done something with it.
BTW, just having a vision in the future isn't enough. If you have a vision but aren't happy with the present, you will find yourself in the "stress and anxiety" bucket. So you want to be happy in the present but look forward to the future.
Having a vision for the future is necessary, but what's really necessary is to make forward progress towards them. And how to do that? Setting goals.
SMART goals are for 🤓
Not all goals are created equal. A common framework for creating goals are make them SMART.
By making your goals SMART, you have both a good change of achieving them (Achievable and Realistic), you actually know when you are done (Specific and Measurable), and you have a deadline (Time-related).
And if this doesn't sound good to you, be like @lisamgentile1961 and try building a consistency chain.
This month's goals
Which brings us to this months goals, specifically related to Hive. @starseeds does a great job of setting goals for each month, and it's clear that this helps motivate him to keep coming back to the community.
My current HP is 23.25, reputation is 53, I have 71 followers, and follow 14. These seem like obvious metrics which can be increased. For the month of March, I am setting these as goals:
HP: 30
Reputation: 58
Followers: 50
Follow: 50
Unfortunately it's not clear to me how fast these numbers go up, so I chose each to be a conservative 10% increase, other than followers which I can directly affect so I chose a higher number. Can you help with this? Write it in the comments please :)
My strategy for obtaining these is twofold:
- Write my daily blog
- Interact with people in the community
I committed to a goal of blogging every day, but my last post was 3 days ago. I still believe this is achievable, but only if I spend less time writing the article (I think I spent 4 hours on the last one). So I will commit to writing something each day, even if it takes less time.
To interact with the community, I have decided to support the members of the SMILE and TheTerminal discord servers, since they have already been helpful in gaining followers. I plan to support the community there every day by reading articles and writing comments.
Thanks for following me, and let me know if there are any topics you would be interested in.
