To create such a luminous plant, scientists from the Masachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) use an enzyme called luciferase. This enzyme works on a molecule called luciferin, which makes it emit light. Another molecule called Co-enzyme A helps the process by removing byproducts that can inhibit luciferase activity. The MIT team then packs each of these components into different types of nanoparticle carriers.
