Who thinks that Netflix's catalog is getting boring, just needs to wait for the debut of The Push. The reality show promises to bring a new level of morbidity to our screens. As Italians we are particularly unlucky, already forced as we are to see wonders such as L'Isola dei Famosi VIP and the endless saga of Big Brother. We really needed anything else than finding stuff like this on Netflix. Mind you, I don't want to draw parallels between a reality show that shows a handful of so-called VIPs on an island with one that deals with understanding how far a human being can go when under pressure. But the question - rhetoric, of course - eventually arises: Who benefits of all this?
The simple answer: the show, of course, but the spin sold to us brands the whole thing as a social psychology experiment. The team behind The Push wants to understand if a human being, opportunely manipulated through the help of 70 actors, will reach the point of pushing an old man from a hill. No one will die, this we can anticipate hope, but the mind goes immediately to the famous Milgram's experiment. In the 1960s, a group of male subjects of various social backgrounds - enlisted with the awareness of being part of a scientific study - were placed before an actor who begged to be released. One of the researchers instructed the group to activate electric shocks of increasing intensity, which in theory could have killed the actor. The result unleashed a wave of shock, as only a minority of the participants refused to execute the orders: despite showing a signs of tension, all the others expressed total obedience without really questioning the orders that were given to them.
It matters little that the work of Milgram, in addition to being very unethical, has been branded of inaccuracy over the decades. And it also does not matter that it has remained an unicum never verified with further and more accurate studies. Today, history repeats itself, or pretends to repeat itself. On TV.
Chi pensa che il catalogo Netflix stia diventando noioso, non deve far altro che aspettare il debutto di The Push. Il nuovo reality show promette di portare sui nostri schermi un nuovo livello di morbosità. A noi italiani, particolarmente sfortunati perché già costretti a vedere meraviglie come L'Isola dei Famosi VIP e la saga infinita del Grande Fratello, serviva tutto tranne che trovare una roba del genere su Netflix. Intendiamoci, non voglio mettere sullo stesso piano un reality che mostra un manipolo di morti di fama su un'isola e uno che si occupa di capire fin dove può spingersi un essere umano sotto pressione. Ma la domanda - retorica, ovviamente - sorge naturale: cui prodest?
La risposta semplice: allo show, ovviamente, ma lo spin che ci viene venduto è quello dell'esperimento di psicologia sociale. Il team che sta dietro a The Push vuole infatti capire se un essere umano inconsapevole, opportunamente manipolato mediante l'aiuto di 70 attori, arriverà al punto di spingere un anziano già da una collina. Nessuno morirà, questo possiamo anticiparlo sperarlo, ma la mente corre subito al famoso esperimento di Milgram. Negli anni '60, un gruppo di soggetti maschi di varia estrazione sociale - arruolati con la consapevolezza di far parte di uno studio scientifico - furono messi davanti ad un attore che implorava di essere liberato. Uno dei ricercatori istruiva il gruppo nell'attivare scariche elettriche di intensità crescenti, che in teoria avrebbero potuto uccidere l'attore. Il risultato destò scalpore, in quanto solo una minoranza dei partecipanti si rifiutò di eseguire gli ordini: pur mostrando segno di tesnione, tutti gli altri mostrarono obbedienza totale senza mettere in discussione gli ordini che venivano impartiti.
Poco importa che il lavoro di Milgram, oltre ad essere molto poco etico, sia stato bollato di inaccuratezza nel corso dei decenni. E poco importa che sia rimasto un unicum mai verificato con ulteriori e più accurati studi. Oggi, la storia si ripete, o pretende di ripetersi. In TV.
