This article on Reuters talks about the delays in the Brexit negotiations that are being caused by both sides trying to gain the upper hand. The delay will inevitably lead to less time that will be available for the detailed negotiations that will be a prerequisite for an actual deal.
With so little time left, it makes the prospect of any deal unlikely.
In my view, both sides are to blame for this because they both have to answer to totally different political needs - Britain wants trade without relinquishing any of its sovereignty on national laws and immigration and the EU wants immigration (the free movement of labor, etc.) and UK national law to be, in some ways, subordinate to the EU courts.
There is simply very little compatibility in what the two sides want and what would be acceptable politically.
