Using stem cells and with a 3D printer, scientist have obtained liver organoids - also called mini-livers - capable of functioning as a real liver.
With this innovation we will be able to produce liver tissue in a laboratory in just 90 days, which may in the future become an alternative to organ transplants.
The innovation of this study lies in the way to include the cells in the bioink, instead of printing individualized cells, these are grouped before printing.
These ‘clumps’ of cells constitute the tissue and maintain its functionality for much longer, as explain its developers.
Obviously all this is in an initial phase and it will take a while to get this technology to the commons of mortals but, it is very good to know that they are in it.
