Gudde Moien and welcome to Planet Althistory, today we are going to discuss what if Morocco joined the European Union?
This is not ASB, there was indeed in 1987 a membership application of Morocco sent to the predecessor of the European Union; the European Communities. As we all know the EC later on became part of the EU.
In such a scenario geography will play the most important role, even before economy. Morocco would have to give up claims on Spanish and Portuguese territory, such as the Canary Islands and Madeira, because Spain and Portugal already joined the EC in 1986. This would not pose a big issue and certainly Morocco would prefer to recognize the status of those islands in order to progress with their membership application much faster.
The more interesting part certainly will be Ceuta and Melilla. Both territories are geographically African, but politically belong to Spain and that since many centuries. And that’s where the UK and Gibraltar would come in. Certainly Morocco’s accession to the EU could go two ways...
