In a recent press briefing , Intel compares it's Xeon line-up with the AMD Naples platform and interestingly enough the company calls the technology "glued-together desktop dies" (chips).
The slide no. 27 describes the AMD Naples platform as "Repurposed Desktop Dies for Server":
This seems to be the response to it's major loss against the AMD's desktop lineup called Ryzen, which literally washed the floor with Broadwell-E CPUs from Intel in most workstation loads.
