Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) has said there will be no more selling of simcards and airtime on the streets as this has been abused by criminals.
"From now on, we shall not allow any hawkers of communication gadgets before the implementation of the new improvements. We have introduced card readers where all the people will have to put in their particulars," said UCC executive director, Mr Godfrey Mutabazi said.
Addressing journalists in Kampala on Friday, Mr Mutabazi also said those who want to sell phones must register with UCC where they will get a licences to operate.
"These phones being sold are not eligible, from now on all should register so that we can have authentic equipment which can be traceable," he said.
UCC claims the directive is as a result of the increased rate of cyber related crimes in the country.
UCC’s new order will see simcard registration and airtime transactions made through only the legalized service centres.
Mr Mutabazi says all telecommunication subscribers will either buy airtime through mobile money or visit a 
licensed agent.
