Lets continue with more teams from the Norwegian top and second division. Let
s go to the south in the country and to Kristiansand. Here we find IK Start.
START IK
September 19, 1905 Start was created. 60 boys aged 15-17 were gathered at the founding meeting in the Turnhallen. They wanted to reconcile a football club because there was no uniform club between Arendal and Flekkefjord. An important point at the meeting was of course what name the club should use. Several different proposals were discussed, including "Ørvarodd", but in the middle of the discussion, a little late Daniel Pedersen stormed and asked if they had any name. "Then I suggest Start," said Pedersen. It was immediately agreed on just this name.
July 26, 1959
First season in upper division
Starts the first season in the main series, which at that time was Norway's top division. The opposition came after two qualifying matches where start won 2-0 against Bryne and 2-0 home against Os.
October 8, 1972
New start
After a few years on the second top level, Start secured a seat in the Top Series after 2-0 against Odd in Skien, with nearly 1000 start supporters on the stand.
October 14, 1973
Bronze and UEFA Cup After a 3-1 win against Rosenborg, the 73 season is over, and Start has secured an impressive third place with the youngest team, directly from the promotion of the year before! In addition to the bronze medal, the third place qualifies for games in Europe the following season.
19 October 1977
Europe-shock
Start has participated in Europa cup a number of times (74, 76, 77, 78, 79, 81, and 06). However, it may be the home match in 1977 that are remembered as the best when Start beat Bundesligalaget Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 at home. Helge Haugen was transcended by Svein Mathisen as it left ten minutes of the match and scored the winning goal. Even after the 0-4 loss in the return match, Braunschweig's star player Paul Breitner, who played in Germany's World Cup team of 74, stated that Start was an "excellent amateur team".
October 15, 1978 Champions! After an exciting last round, Start could be called Norway's best team for the first time! The season was settled in the last round where Start had to win against Bodø Glimt, while Vålerengen had to beat Lillestrøm, which had as many points as Start before the last round. So when Start did the job and won the match 0-1 after scoring Sven Otto Birkeland, and Lillestrøm lost 1-3 against Vålerengen at home, the series gold was a fact.
October 8, 1989
" Svein "Matta" Mathisen retires after the 89 season. Mat will be enough of many remembered as one of the best Start player with its 663 matches in yellow and black, of which 327 were in the top division and a total of 106 goals as both are club records. In addition to this, he became a series champion with Start both in 1978 and in 1980, and played 25 matches with the Norwegian flag on the chest.
29 October 2005
Start took silver directly from promotion to the elite series after two seasons in the first division. As in the gold contest in 1978 and 1980, the gold had to be secured in the last series round, which this time fell home to Fredrikstad. The frames around the game were of the very rare, with the audience record of 16,536 spectators who were to shed the black and yellow. Unfortunately, there was no gold this time when the match ended 1-3 in Fredrikstad’ s favor.
April 15, 2007 Record at Sparebanken Sør Arena After the politicians gave green light for the construction of a new stadium in Marvika, it was finally ready for opening in 2007 against the rivalries from the west. Opening match against Viking ended 1-1 after scoring from Søren Berg and Ygor Santiago in front of 14,448 spectators, which still stands as audience record.
October 5, 2008
"The mosquito" -comeback One of the magical moments at Sparebanken Sør Arena was when Erik Mykland came in after 58 minutes for his comeback in the match against Sandnes Ulf on October 5, 2008. Having left the football since 2004 and not played for Start since 1996, he had over 11 000 supporters to welcome him back. Mykland has 168 matches for Start in two periods (1989-1996 and 2008-2009), and with its 78 national matches, he is the Start player who has the most matches with the flag on his chest.
September 19, 2015
110 years after both economic and sporting challenges, Start is still alive. Full 110 years after Daniel Pedersen suggested the name Start at a club that would reconcile football enthusiasts between Arendal and Flekkefjord. Saturday, September 19th, it was the jubilee match at Sparebanken Sør Arena against Lillestrøm. We hope the future will give us many new highlights - which will be worth drawing forward at the next anniversary!
Start IK today plays in the second division, and is currently placed on 2 place, after the season is half way played. This year I personally think IK Start will be promoted to the top division.
