On this occasion I wanted to prepare my students to make lights, shadows and volume in their drawings, it occurred to me that the best way to get into this is with the technique of "crosshatching" which is one of my favorite techniques (all my sketches in pencil they are with this technique) it is also the most used in the Japanese MANGA industry and the renowned comic artist "Todd McFarlane" (author of Spawn) It is also the one used in the illustrations of my favorite book saga "La Spiderwick Chronicles "(read the books and fall in love with the illustrations, but for nothing in the world watch the movie is BAD and they didn't get attached to anything), this technique is fascinating because it deceives the eyes with an illusion of shades of gray , when only a single tone is being used and it is really easy to learn, it is only a matter of your creativity how to apply it in your works, and something that is totally sure to learn and master this technique, is that all The drawings made with crosshatching will be impressive, attractive and very fascinating with a fantastic aura. ^ _ ^

The pressure applied in each stroke is important in this technique, so it starts by applying a lot of pressure at the beginning of the stroke where the shadow will be and will be reduced until it is delicate in the direction of where the light source.

Crosshatching consists only of lines to simulate the effect of shadows and volume, for this it depends on the separation between each lines and the amount of the fabric caused by them, the more lines are crossed both horizontally, vertically or diagonally more dark will be.

I made these portraits exclusively for this guide, instead these four other examples are some drawings that I did previously to tell a little horror story, and in them I applied the technique of crosshatching the best I could, and I am totally proud of the result I achieved in them especially the last one where the monster appears, and I love how this technique looks in digital.
