I'm still on site!
I'm truly stuck in the gig-economy these days. I'm on site working 12-16hr days to get this project finished. At that point I can invoice it and wait anywhere from 35-50days to get paid. Its this feeling that I have RIGHT NOW that had made getting out of the gig hamster-wheel is so important.
To complain about this project for a couple lines, its a painful one. The client has hired another contractor to be the project manager, and that PM doesn't have any experience so it means nothing is done ahead of time.
To make things worse they didn't want to "waste time with meetings" so they didn't have any; and worse again they didn't review ANY of the submitals before I arrived on site.
It's been a painful experience from start-to-finish. But you don't want to read about me complaining, you want to know how the Project is doing.
What did I get done this week?
Nothing much, except some thinking and research.
I'm following a course on online product creation and one of the phases is immersion, getting right into the idea. The goal is to figure out if there is a potential of product/market fit before even starting ANYTHING. The course mimmicks a lot of what Scott Belsky thinks about product creation and design, which makes me even more confident that I made the right decision to start there.
Since I'm on site I haven't done any newsletter marketing, written any letters, participated in social media, etc; but I still recieved one new subscriber. Since my list is still so small, I celebrate every singe subscribe. I must be doing something right if someone wants to give me their email address and opt-in.
The flip side of that is I mourn every un-subscribe wondering what I should have don't differently. The second podcast below, the one called Starting Greatness has helped me start to re-frame those un-subscribes. When you are starting you Don't want to be for everyone!, in fact you want to appeal to a very select few that will joyfully consume your product and give feedback.
There is some time on site
One of the things that I have "extra" of on site is time in a car, commuting, so I get to catch up on podcasts that I haven't had a chance to listen to. The Tim Ferriss Podcast with Scott Belsky from September of last year was great! It was just the right podcast at just the right time. If you are thinking of creating ANY type of product you need to give it a listen.
Another podcast from Tim (actually the first in a brand new podcast called Starting Greatness) was an interview with Andy Rachleff by Mike Maples, Jr. titled Two Questions Every Entrepreneur Should Answer (#397). It was another great timed listen while I'm trying to figure out what market and idea I want to focus my energy on; since I lack the time to do much else.
The goal
The goal is to build a product or series of products that allows me to scale. The financial goal is to build a business that has a monthly revenue stream of $5k with less than 20hrs worked on average by the end of March 2020.
