She leaned into give her husband a good night kiss. He pulled keys from his pocket and grabbed a lunch bag quietly exiting by the front door. His job as police officer went like this. Long ago, she used to lie awake for hours worrying if he would be shot out there with all the miscreants in his beat. Every loud noise made her jump and look out toward the garage. She would lay back down and toss and turn until sleep finally overtook her.
Now she walked through the house turning off lights and stopping to brush her teeth. She picked up a book on the nightstand and began reading. She realized now that God was watching out for her husband. He wasn't bulletproof, but she knew God would bring him back tonight, and every night and no amount of worry would be the needed protection, but she lifted him up in prayer once more and gave him back to God.
Her book lost its appeal at 11 PM. A feeling of dread swept through her body. Her fingers curled in response to goosebumps rippling her bare arms.
She jumped in her chair when the phone began trilling it's new call ring. Her hand darted to retrieve it.
"Hello? Mrs. Adams, this is Luetenent Davis. I need you to come to Markes Community Medical Center. Your husband has been in an altercation."
