From an art of inexhaustible depth in skill, to a spiritual message or form itself, music has (over the years) been seen and interpreted as a plethora of things. Persons from different works of life have sort to give various explanations to their concepts of music and its importance (amongst other properties). One of the most significant importances of music is its relevance to man's health and stability.
Through the years, the therapeutic effect of music has been explored and revoiced by many. Its gains in mental, physical, emotional, social, aesthetic and spiritual healing of individuals of all ages has been highlighted over the years across various societies. In the Ottoman empire, music was used to remedy mental illness. William Shakespare describes music in his literary work as "the food of love". Albert Einstein was known to be endeared to music. He said, "whenever he felt that he had come to the end of the road or into a difficult situation in his work, he would take refuge in music, and that would usually resolve all his difficulties."
Researchers have pointed at music as an important remedy for melancholia and schizophrenia, amongst other psychiatric disorders. It is known to remedy inter-personal problems and communication disorders, reduce stress and build self-esteem. Music therapy is used with developmental and physical disabilities, sensory impairments, insomnia, substance abuse cases and even aging.
It is difficult to pinpoint the healing ingredient in music but, one thing is certain; the rhythm and overall energy of sound in music has an ability to cause resonations in beings that set them in a default, balanced, positively ordered or improved state.
I believe the healing essence of music is its ability to reach the soul through moods and emotions. Hence, soul-related ailments may find remedy in it.
Hence, listening to pleasing music, singing and/or playing instruments is not just leisure activity, it is a soul-healing art with lots of benefits.
