Within no time the breakfast arrived steaming. A lent pen let me write the scene. A long corridor kitchen with many hands sliding, chopping.
“Wilson’s is therapy. To this day.”
The sausage benedict fed the belly, as it teased the sense. Soft and warm, sauce drizzled over eggs poached. The meal replenished the boys spent from a night of less temperance than Benjamin Franklin might advise. An orosensation sensual enough to confuse with making love, devouring remained the only option. The “cold seat” of the diner let January through the door with every customer. The cooks could use the ventilation, but I sat desiring warmth, answering it with egg, sausage and an English muffin sopping with Hollandaise and yolk.
The sounds of the diner accented the atmosphere. Everyone began their Sunday with breakfast and here, breakfast reigned with a kind hand.
“Daddy, look!!”
“Daddy, look at what they’re showing you.” More insistence followed the last request, similar to how hungry guests asked for ham & cheese omelets.
Atop the plate, the fork shoveled hollandaise like snow. The starch of the home fries-
“I need home fries out! Chopped tomatoes out!”
The head cook sending directions to her team on her left and right cut through the thoughts and childrens’ cooing like a steak knife. The muffin fell apart under the serrated edge.
…the home fries absorbed the yolk with ease.
“How much is a muffin?”
“Three fifty.
“Grilled. Especially grilled.”
A third voice chiming from another conversation mingled on the plate of hubbub within Wilson’s.
“Mean. Like fried strudel.”
Lockwood reflected aloud as I considered my own temperance. I certainly didn’t hold back last night.
In line with the 13 virtues by Ben Franklin, could I improve? James Clear made mention of it and it sat as an open tab in my web browser for the weekend, waiting for the moment I explore the lead. So could I? Yes. That much looks clear… but the idea isn’t just improvement alone, but inspiration. How did some of the best of them do it? Leaders, artists, sure, but anyone of the noteworthy go-getters we talk about to this day- how? Facing off with phishing threats and finding myself stuck fast between family and friends- how could I rise? And not fall under the weight of
my ambition… ‘There’s nothing wrong with a lil’ self-improvement.’
The 13 Virtues
“Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.”
There’s a thought.
All the ideas hold tones for lasting tenets. I’m leaving my mother waiting for tech support as I pen the blueprint to a better me. I could certainly automate some. I shouldn’t rush though- helping her or choosing habits, but I cannot hide my enthusiasm. The feeling’s like negatives on film. I await development.
Post Summary
- Starting your day with breakfast was like making your bed. Setting the tone for the day would lead to according behaviors.
- Ending your night a certain way would also begin the next day accordingly.
- Individuals throughout history who accomplished great things often had mantras or systems of belief that guided their accomplishments. I could use summa them, so I'm taking notes.
