Hair raises. Nerves tingle. Body sends an emergency message:
Get the hell out! GET OUT NOW!
And then, what happens? Something bad, right? Something that might have been avoided if you'd gotten up and left the moment that tingling sensation began.
That's the problem though. We've constantly got so much information coming at us, that we're unconsciously ignoring 90% of it. Our early warning systems, the sensations that our bodies send to our brains, are only effective if we listen.
Feeling the Vibes: Places
The old adage says places have memories. The ancient Romans talked of the genius loci or spirit of a place. In both cases, the thought is that certain places evoke certain feelings from the people who visit them. It's why the crazy hospital puts people on edge, the graveyard-after-dark creeps people out, and passing prisons makes people paranoid. The ominous has a real feel to it, something that hippies call bad vibes.
Carlos Castaneda talked of sitting in different spots to find your place of power. He said every location and every person has a different power spot. If you want to screw with someone's vibe, wait for them to get up, then take their spot and watch them squirm when they return.
Meditation groups speak of making the meditation spot suitable, comfortable, or otherwise fit for deep meditation. Even religions deal in the ritual cleansings of places and people. You might even catch interior decorators talking about the feng-shui of a room.
Feeling the Vibes: People
It's not just places that have genius loci. The ancient Romans talked about the Genius of a man and the Juno of a woman. Investigators go with their guts as a they try to locate the truth. We're told to listen to instinct and to follow our intuition. Some people give the creeps, while others just feel right and we click immediately.
Chemistry is where science points us. Talking about the chemical reactions between people who are attracted to each other. But, even this is just one more way to describe the unknown processes behind the very real experience of feeling the vibes. The more we learn about the chemical responses of the body, the more we learn how little the conscious brain actually does.
There's an unseen force at work in the Vibes arena. Perhaps it's that mysterious 90% of information that we ignore. If that's the case, then we're obviously not actually ignoring that input. Apparently, we're loading it in our /vibes/ directory to be processed in the background, while we consciously handle what may appear more important.
Flowing with the Vibes
There's so much going on behind the scenes that we're essentially reactionaries responding to stimuli. We are now and have always been reactionaries. We exist in a cosmic microsecond that is always behind the times. So when we feel something ain't right, it's really our consciousness finally picking up on some sensory input that our body registered moments earlier. It's not only important that we recognize these vibe messages, we must also listen to them.
Good and bad happen. We can go with it or fight against it. The input we receive, those vibes, give us physical hints about what to expect from a situation or person. The more we tune into the atmosphere of a room or the aura of a person, the better equipped we'll be to handle what ever is thrown at us.
So, the next time you find yourself not really feeling it:
Go with it. Trust that feeling and get the fuck out of there.
