I don't think I've ever talked about my computer tinkering on this blog of mine, and honestly, I don’t know why. As far back as I can remember, I’ve loved taking things apart — and computers, well... they’re the ultimate puzzles.
The first machine I ever tore apart was a 286 IBM that my grandfather gave me in my pre-teen years. I had no idea what I was doing, but curiosity got the best of me. Removing the lid to see "the guts" wasn’t too difficult anyway. That computer served us well for many years, and it probably sparked my deep curiosity for computing.
Some years later, my grandmother bought an IBM Aptiva for the office — a monster at the time, with a 100 MHz processor, 8 megabytes of RAM, and a whopping 1 gigabyte of hard drive space. I remember vividly thinking there was no way I’d ever outgrow this computer. A whole gigabyte sounded like a bottomless pit to my young ears. Of course, that changed quickly when MP3s became a thing and collecting music turned into my most important hobby.
Throughout my teens, I spent most of my time fixing, upgrading, and assembling computers. Mostly desktops, but occasionally a laptop would make its way into my hands. I'm not going to sit here and tell you I never fumbled the ball — because I did — but I never shied away from a challenge. It didn’t matter if it was someone’s home PC or a corporate NT server worth more than I cared to admit.
My “I’ll figure it out after I jump” attitude has gotten me into trouble more than once, but it’s also pushed me to attempt some very difficult things. And some of those feats, some of those little adventures... I treasure deeply. Like the time I swapped out a car engine using a homemade lift right here on the farm.
All this to say: the tinkerer in me seems to be up to no good again. I’m breaking things in the name of learning — just like the old days. Today, for example, I found my wife’s old phone buried in a forgotten drawer. A Samsung from nine years ago — barely usable. But as I stared at its fragile plastic frame and shattered screen, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Can I install Linux on this thing?”
I know most people would ask — and I wouldn’t blame them — Why? But the why isn't really that important. Not for me. It’s fun. And that’s probably enough.
That said, rooting this phone has turned out to be more difficult than I expected. I haven’t given up — no worries — but it looks like I’ll need to solder a new port to try “a different way.” And maybe I will.
This odd little brain dump to close an otherwise regular Monday reminds me of something someone once told me. I wish I could give proper credit, but I suspect “the author” was probably just parroting someone else.

A tad sexist, I’ll admit — but also something I clearly identify with. I never stopped playing with things, tinkering with toys, learning how the damn things work. And truthfully, I hope I never do.

No creo haber hablado nunca de mi afición a trastear con computadoras en este blog, y honestamente, no sé por qué. Desde que tengo memoria, me ha gustado desarmar cosas — y las computadoras, bueno... son el rompecabezas definitivo.
La primera computadora que desarmé fue una IBM 286 que mi abuelo me regaló cuando era preadolescente. No tenía ni idea de lo que estaba haciendo, pero la curiosidad pudo más. Quitar la tapa para ver "las tripas" no fue tan difícil. Esa computadora nos sirvió durante muchos años, y probablemente fue la que despertó mi profunda curiosidad por la computación.
Pasaron algunos años y mi abuela compró una IBM Aptiva para la oficina. Una bestia para su época: procesador de 100 MHz, 8 megas de RAM, y un disco duro de 1 giga. Recuerdo haber pensado que jamás iba a necesitar más espacio. Un gigabyte entero sonaba como un abismo insondable para mis oídos de niño. Claro, eso cambió rápido cuando aparecieron los MP3 y coleccionar música se convirtió en mi obsesión.
Durante mi adolescencia pasé la mayoría del tiempo reparando, mejorando y armando computadoras. Sobre todo escritorios, pero de vez en cuando caía un portátil en mis manos. No voy a sentarme aquí a decir que nunca metí la pata — porque sí lo hice — pero nunca le escapé a un reto. No importaba si era la PC de alguien o un servidor NT carísimo de una oficina corporativa.
Mi actitud de “ya lo averiguo después de saltar” me metió en problemas más de una vez, pero también me empujó a intentar cosas muy difíciles. Algunas de esas hazañas, de esas aventuras, las atesoro profundamente. Como aquella vez que cambié el motor de un carro usando una grúa casera, aquí mismo en la finca.
Todo esto para decir que el trasteador que llevo dentro parece estar tramando algo otra vez. Hoy, por ejemplo, encontré el celular viejo de mi esposa en un cajón olvidado. Un Samsung de hace nueve años. Casi inusable. Pero mientras miraba su plástico débil y su pantalla rota, no pude evitar preguntarme: “¿Puedo instalarle Linux a esto?”
Sé que muchos preguntarían — y no los culpo — ¿Para qué? Pero el “para qué” no importa mucho en estos casos. Al menos para mí. Es divertido. Y con eso me basta.
Eso sí, hackear este teléfono, o rootearlo como le dicen, ha sido más difícil de lo que pensaba. No me he rendido, tranquilo, pero parece que voy a tener que soldar un puerto diferente para intentar “otro camino”. Y quizás lo haga.
Este desahogo mental para cerrar un lunes bastante normal me recordó algo que alguien me dijo hace mucho. Me gustaría darle el crédito como se debe, pero sospecho que esa persona también estaba repitiendo lo que escuchó de otro.
“Los hombres son solo niños que cambiaron sus juguetes por otros más serios.”
Un poco sexista, lo admito — pero también algo con lo que me identifico mucho. Nunca dejé de jugar con cosas, de trastear con juguetes, de intentar entender cómo funcionan. Y la verdad, espero no dejar de hacerlo nunca.
