Photographing at night brings a totally different atmosphere to your pictures and this can be very refreshing. Playing with different sources of light and shutter speeds can create some really cool effects.
I personally started off with shooting on a tripod using long shutter speeds, like you can see in the image above. At first I really liked it, but as I started shooting more I felt that the light trails and the staged scenes where getting a little cheesy and I missed the spontaneousness of street photography. That’s why I just shoot handheld now and I try to look for cool compositions and sources of light that highlight certain subjects on the streets.
It can be challenging at times but if you shoot wide open with a f1.4 lens and keep your iso around 800 you can get some great shots without ever having to use a tripod and you can interact quickly with things happening on the streets.
