There is no compelling narrative without contrast and conflict, in other words, without darkness, foes and heroes. Unless you have given yourself over completely to a meditative or non-thought state, we are all narrating our lives in one way or another. Labelling good and evil, desirable or repulsive.

That said, I have recently learned that there are some who do not experience an inner monologue. You lucky sods. If this is you. I am intrigued beyond belief how it is that you think. Please share.

But unless you are one of these possibly blessed individuals, we are all telling ourselves a very subjective, likely ego-ridden stories about our shared reality.

If we are constructing a narrative, then certainly that narrative will include something that could be characterized as dark, or at least in contrast to that which we consider desirable/light.

The thing is ... and this is me from to time ... I am not your master, but your co-learner ... some of us get stuck in dark narratives and attached to dark relationships and pursuits, those things that make us feel guilty, grieved, or simply not good enough.

We focus and prioritize attention on the non-healthful: healthful things being that which nurture and sustain us, pursuits that promote balance, longevity, and contentment; maximize ease and joy within existence, cause us to stop and smell the proverbial roses and to avoid grasping at the thorns.

The snafu is that life needs its contrast to be perceived by physical beings bound to physical senses. Us. The harsh truth is that we need darkness to perceive existence; we need some level of ego to learn and even to maintain life; but ego loves its darkness. Many of us overwhelmed by our egos Byronic ways become lost in the darkness to the near exclusion of light. I mean who doesn't love the wit and intelligence of an anti-hero with a head of dark locks. Guilty.
