The 2008 Olympic sailing and rowing events were held in Qingdao, China. The background shows the Olympic Rings and the marina. Qingdao is about the size of Chicago and slightly larger than London. It's nickname is the "Sailing City." Many sailing and boating events come to Qingdao annually, including the 'Round the World Yacht Race.'
The Wind of May monument commemorates a pro-democracy movement in China around 1917. The Chinese fought on the side of the Allies in both World War One and Two, with Chinese troops deployed in France. The pro-democracy movement was squelched when the Allies failed to honor promises made to China (to return all occupied territory to Chinese control after the war.) Chinese contributions to both war efforts are largely ignored, such as keeping half a million Japanese troops occupied while the US troops crossed the Pacific in WW 2.
