It isn't everyday you have the opportunity to experience a piece of ice so large that it has a name and is tracked with satellites. There was a concern from some of the scientific community that this iceberg was on a course to collide with South Georgia Island. The main concern was that due to its sheer size it may block and cause the animals that breed there to have to swim a lot further in order to reach their usual feeding grounds.
Basically, the concern was that due to the increase in distance required to reach their usual feeding grounds it may result in a high fatality amongst certain populations. However, since the iceberg has calved (broken up) and now travelling away from South Georgia, which is a sigh of relief for some concerned scientists. For me, I will always remember the day I spent slowly cruising beside this huge piece of ice. Admiring the countless amounts of fur seals, penguins, whales and other bird species.
