Whether or not we will one day create Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), there is no doubt that in some disciplines, AI models are already capable of great feats, such as the creation of new materials. Their ability to analyze large volumes of data, identify patterns, and predict the properties of new compounds greatly accelerates innovation.
Independientemente de que algún día lleguemos a crear una Inteligencia General Artificial (AGI), no cabe duda de que en algunas disciplinas los modelos de inteligencia artificial ya son capaces de grandes proezas, como es el caso de la creación de nuevos materiales. Su capacidad para analizar grandes volúmenes de datos, identificar patrones y predecir propiedades de nuevos compuestos acelera enormemente la innovación.
Now, a group of researchers from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering has used machine learning algorithms to optimize structures at the nanometer level, something that would be nearly impossible with traditional methods. They have succeeded in creating a material stronger than steel but as light as polystyrene.
Ahora un grupo de investigadores de la Facultad de Ciencias Aplicadas e Ingeniería de la Universidad de Toronto, han utilizado algoritmos de aprendizaje automático para optimizar las estructuras a nivel nanométrico, algo que sería casi imposible con métodos tradicionales. The material is constructed from tiny blocks of carbon, assembled into complex 3D structures called nanolattices, measuring a few hundred nanometers. The optimized designs were created using a two-photon 3D printer at the University of Texas at Austin's Centre for Research and Application in Fluid Technologies (CRAFT).

The optimized nanolattices were shown to be more than twice the strength of existing designs, withstanding a stress of 2.03 megapascals per cubic meter per kilogram of its density, making it five times stronger than titanium but with an extremely low density, making it as light as foam.

It can reduce the weight of airplanes, satellites, and rockets, improving fuel efficiency and reducing launch costs, or create lighter and stronger structures for buildings and bridges, which would facilitate their construction and increase their durability.
