The Pirate Party is a political party first founded in Sweden in January 2006 founded by Rickard Falkvinge rallying mainly around net neutrality of the internet. In the wake of the Pirate Bay sharing website conversations the Pirates set sail.
What is unique about the Pirates is that they are for direct democracy on all levels of government. They are strong proponents of open-source software programs that enable electronic democracy to the masses. The main voting software the Pirates use themselves is called Liquid Feedback. They have also been known to use other forms of open-source software.
The Pirate movement has spread to many countries around the world and has taken many seats in European parliament. Countries such as Germany, Iceland Sweden and more have seats of Pirates in their parliaments. Recently in 2016 in late October, the Pirates were said to potentially take Iceland from the main political party, the Independent party. Falling short in the polls they were not able to take majority control in the parliament but raised from the 6th to the third largest party in the whole nation.
The Pirate Party truly is a growing movement in our world today. There is a strong feeling of discontent across the world that representative democracy systems are failing. The Pirates are of the few who are actually addressing the situation directly. Think about what kind of world we would live in if we're able to keep in check our elected officials through direct democracy processes. Think about the convenience and security of a blockchain democracy systems you can access from your home computer from your personal cell phone tablet or Kindle devices.
The reality of having an easy democracy software implemented on national levels is what the Pirates see as a real possibility.
