Decir "bien" parece automático. Pero, más allá de decir cosas buenas en voz alta (y eso está bien), algunos creen que casi se ha convertido en un formalismo, que muchas veces se distancia mucho de la realidad, porque no estamos "bien", específicamente en la parte mental.
Desde hace más de doce años he vivido de cerca la lucha que una persona puede librar contra una enfermedad mental, y desde hace dos años empecé a atender mi salud mental. Así que en éste tema tengo algo de teoría y algo de práctica. Y parte de mi opinión puedo extraerla de un mural que vi en una institución pública, y la usaré como bosquejo, detallando algunas palabras clave: "Dale 'like' a la salud mental por el derecho a crecer en bienestar."
Like. Es un término que conocemos mucho, y se refiere a una reacción positiva al contenido que genera otro usuario de una red social en común. Estamos diciendo de que nos gusta lo que vemos, oímos o leemos. Y no pocos usuarios suelen reaccionar de tal forma a contenidos que les parecen útiles en materia de salud mental, como consejos, frases, afirmaciones, etc. Pero una cosa es estar de acuerdo con eso y otra cosa es aplicarlo en nuestra vida. Es fácil caer en la trampa de que, como nos codeamos con éste tipo de contenido con regularidad en nuestro feed, automáticamente tenemos salud en el ámbito mental. Eso sería como pretender hojear someramente un libro de química todos los días y creer que ya somos químicos.
Una reacción realmente positiva es ejecutar una acción, y eso sería realizar acciones concretas para atender nuestra salud mental. Así como una prueba de sangre nos dice cuantitativamente cómo está nuestro organismo, los profesionales de la salud pueden ayudarnos a evaluarnos cualitativamente en qué estado estamos emocionalmente. A nadie, nadie, le perjudica una conversación con éste tipo de médicos en una cita formal. Eso no quiere decir necesariamente de que necesitan algún fármaco, o están enfermos. Es como la prueba de sangre: si los valores están dentro de lo normal, no hace falta mayores ajustes, sólo seguir la rutina saludable que se trae. Con la salud mental sucede lo mismo.
Salud mental. Para mi, es sentirse bien y poder llevar la vida con relativa normalidad, libre de pesos innecesarios. Implica tener las ganas y las fuerzas para enfrentar los retos diarios sin desplomarse. Sin duda, de vez en cuando enfrentaremos situaciones que atentan contra nuestra estabilidad emocional, pero si tenemos salud podremos superarlo en cierta manera, a nuestro propio ritmo. Pero quedarnos "enganchados" con esas situaciones es una señal de que estamos siendo afectados mental y emocionalmente.
Por eso, tener una buena salud mental es una meta razonable, que se logra tomando buenas decisiones, hacia la dirección correcta. Y muchas veces, resulta beneficioso la ayuda de los profesionales. A veces podemos creer que "estamos bien", que no lo necesitamos. Pero, ¿será cierto? ¿Qué opina sobre eso nuestra pareja, nuestra familia?
Bienestar. Es un estado ideal para cumplir con nuestros deberes y responsabilidades familiares, personales, laborales, comunitarias, etc. Estarán presentes las dificultades, pero tendremos la entereza para aguantarlas o superarlas, porque nos sentimos bien. Y si para llegar allí necesitamos ayuda, bien vale la pena. No hay que escatimar recursos para eso, puesto que nos permitirá alcanzar muchas de las demás cosas.
Este es un banco justo al frente del mural del principio. En su momento de seguro lucía firme, limpio y estable. Pero el paso del tiempo hace que necesite mantenimiento. También, lo que lo rodea incide en su aspecto y condición. La salud mental es un tema importante, donde algunas veces no tendremos toda la razón, ni lo sabremos absolutamente todo sobre nosotros mismos. La ayuda profesional generalmente nos ayuda a evaluarnos objetivamente y encontrar soluciones que nos ayuden a dar un paso más hacia adelante en ésta vida que constantemente cambia de forma. La humildad será necesaria, para reconocer de que, en ocasiones, eso de sentirse bien solo está en nuestra mente.

Saying ‘good’ seems automatic. But, beyond saying good things out loud (and that's fine), some believe that it has almost become a formality, often far removed from reality, because we are not ‘well’, specifically on the mental side.
For more than twelve years I have experienced first hand the struggle that a person can have with mental illness, and two years ago I started to take care of my mental health. So on this subject I have some theory and some practice. And part of my opinion can be taken from a mural I saw in a public institution, and I will use it as a sketch, detailing some key words: ‘Like mental health for the right to grow in wellness.
Like. It's a term we know a lot about, and it refers to a positive reaction to content generated by another user of a common social network. We are saying that we like what we see, hear or read. And not a few users tend to react in this way to content that they find useful in terms of mental health, such as advice, phrases, statements, etc. But it is one thing to agree with that and another thing to apply it in our lives. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that because we regularly come across this type of content in our feed, we are automatically mentally healthy. That would be like pretending to skim through a chemistry book every day and believing that we are already chemists.
A truly positive reaction is to perform an action, and that would be to take concrete actions to take care of our mental health. Just as a blood test tells us quantitatively how our body is doing, health professionals can help us assess qualitatively what state we are in emotionally. No one, no one, is harmed by a conversation with such a doctor in a formal appointment. It doesn't necessarily mean that they need a drug, or that they are ill. It's like a blood test: if the values are within the normal range, you don't need to make any major adjustments, just follow the healthy routine you bring with you. It's the same with mental health.
Mental health. For me, it means feeling good and being able to lead a relatively normal life, free of unnecessary burdens. It means having the desire and strength to face daily challenges without collapsing. Undoubtedly, from time to time we will face situations that threaten our emotional stability, but if we are healthy we can overcome them to some extent, at our own pace. But getting ‘stuck’ in those situations is a sign that we are being affected mentally and emotionally.
Therefore, having good mental health is a reasonable goal, which is achieved by making good decisions, in the right direction. And often, professional help is beneficial. Sometimes we may believe that ‘we are fine’, that we don't need it. But what does our partner, our family think about that?
Well-being. It is an ideal state to fulfil our family, personal, work, community, etc. duties and responsibilities. Difficulties will be present, but we will have the strength to endure or overcome them, because we feel good. And if we need help to get there, it is well worth it. We should spare no resources for that, as it will enable us to achieve many of the other things.
This is a bench just in front of the mural at the beginning. At the time it surely looked firm, clean and stable. But the passage of time means that it is in need of maintenance. Also, its surroundings affect its appearance and condition. Mental health is an important issue, where sometimes we will not be completely right, nor know absolutely everything about ourselves. Professional help usually helps us to evaluate ourselves objectively and find solutions that help us to take a step forward in this constantly changing life. Humility will be necessary, to recognise that sometimes feeling good is only in our minds.
