I hadn't played Hotshot Racing in a good while, between the first four months of 2024 being taken over by getting over the last stretch of university...and the rest being taken over by several other games that happened to get a firm grasp over my attention, but-

Hey, what if we try out this game I got here on Steam - haven't played it in a while, but you brought up Sonic All Stars Racing, and this one was also made by the same devs.
And that's how I ended up playing Hotshot Racing again. And at split-screen mode for the first time as well.
It was funnier than we could have expected.
No takedowns, but a lot of road rage for sure
See, Hotshot Racing is an arcade racer that, while wears the visual inspiration of Virtua Racing with the flat-shaded polygons on its sleeve along with DNA of the Outrun 2 and the Sonic Racing games with the crazy drifts, also happens to have an additional detail that makes it a bit more chaotic to play with friends.
Physics.
Not in the sense of how the car controls, but more so the fact that you can get pushed into walls by another racers - or viceversa, and see your car spin out into the wrong way or being bounced a bit high by a car behind in a spectacular yet non-telegraphed way.
It isn't the same as the Burnout games where a crash gets you a special animation [nor like Burnout 3 Takedown onwards where you get to see when you make someone crash], but it does remind me of the games because you STILL can get to ruin someone's race handily if you are willing to slam them into the nearest wall until something happens to them - or even funnier enough, accidentally getting into someone's way and causing them to crash instead.
With how this was the first game in a week or so where I got to play splitscreen not only with two friends that I hadn't played it in a while, but also on a racing game where both of them eventually got a decent handle to actually enjoy playing, the yells as we sometimes tried to push each other for no reason other than amusement, or even more relevant than that, trying to push the AI racers to get them out of the way, were really something that made it so much fun to play.
Tackling the Grand Prix with all the mechanics
Players have three things that they can use to their advantage:
- Do drifts to both maneuver on harsh turns and build boost
- Draft other racers to gain gradual speed and also build boost
- And finally, using the boost you've stocked up in the right moments to overtake or keep a lead.
The boost gaining from drifts reminds me of the newer Ridge Racer games, but having that combined with a way less hand-holding drift style that looks like Outrun 2 while other racers try to tackle you Burnout style...that's sure an interesting combination that you wouldn't guess from the surface unless you tried it out.
But the reason why I bring that up is because, of course, the AI could easily decide to speed up to either catch up or get a lead that you will only really take back with boosts and good drifts. But at least in Normal difficulty, the main thing you'll notice is that they just don't often stay behind - so that was a reason why we tried to target the AI so that they didn't get more GP points ahead of time.
Yeah, we were actually playing the Grand Prix mode - while we first played a mode where you could drop explosive barrels [its as funny as it sounds], we then dove head first into ALL of the Grand Prix cups, as thankfully, the game DOES let you play up to four players in splitscreen. The last cup, which was added with a free DLC, was definitely the hardest one even at the same Normal difficulty, between some of the tracks having more finicky turns and the bots just being harder than usual [keeping close to me in the first race at all times].
But okay, so you may be adept enough at this game to smoke the cups in Normal Grand Prix handily, that's good. However, do NOT underestimate the Expert difficulty.
Rubberbanding like old SEGA racers
That's right, if you thought the racers would be fairly simple to overtake and keep in the rear mirror often, that not only depends of how you perform in general to be able to keep a lead...but also if the bots [or players] don't start slamming into you on sight and potentially disrupting your race as you try to recover from an intentionally caused crash.
The AI can already be funnily aggressive sometimes in Normal difficulty, but there's also a Hard and Expert difficulty - and you can guess how Expert really cranks up the AI speed to the point that you'll need to stay behind the racers at all costs for drafting and taking all the drifts you can to store up boost just to catch up at the very end.
While I somehow managed to keep the lead in the first GP with points after finishing the first race first [and I mean that because I thought I would soon fall when getting a few lower placements in the next three races...but I didn't], the one time I got a first place finish in the third GP in Expert mode, I failed to perform consistently, lost a few positions in the next two races, and while I may or may not have had a chance to overtake in the last race, I blew it with a wrong-timed drift.
Oh well, at least I got a recording of that first go - and someday I'll have to retry but with a fresh head. The only way I got to overtake at the end was through staying close to the top racers in the final lap, then use two stored boosts to zip at the last turns.

Conclusion
The game clearly looks like would run at a smooth 60fps at a console or PC capable of that even at 4P splitscreen [which may not be the case for me, but still really appreciated], and while may seem unassuming for some at a first glance, it does have something to go for it whether you want to play it casually or want to go the extra mile at mastering what the game gives you to tackle the Hard and Expert difficulties.
The soundtrack has some cool highlights here and there, but oddly enough the default sound settings make it easy to be drowned by the sound effects, announcer and racer voiceovers - although if you want to give your game an extra kick of adrenaline, you can go and play any of your racing game music of choice to feel those drifts extra fast. I recently tried it with Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune music and definitely made it feel even cooler than before.
Oh, and I happened to get ONE online match going when I randomly decided to check the lobby and found two players going at it - probably the first online match I actually ever got to play in the game. Must have been two friends racing casually though, because after I joined and stole the race...I got kicked out 😅
But oh well, maybe someday I may find people to arrange more races with. In any case though, cool game after all. Would be cool to see it get more tracks in the future after it only got a single new cup through DLC, but at least the package is neat enough for an arcade racer when it has more modes than the standard racing and time attack, multiplayer support for GP and online functionality.

Afrontar el Gran Premio con todas las mecánicas
Los jugadores tienen tres cosas que pueden usar a su favor:
- Hacer derrapes para maniobrar en curvas cerradas y ganar turbo.
- Hacer rebufo a otros corredores para ganar velocidad gradualmente y también aumentar el turbo.
- Y, por último, usar el impulso acumulado en los momentos adecuados para adelantar o mantener la ventaja.
La forma en la que consigues turbo con los derrapes me recuerda a los nuevos juegos de Ridge Racer, pero combinarlo con un estilo de derrape mucho más manual que se parece a Outrun 2 mientras otros corredores intentan adelantarte al estilo Burnout... es sin duda una combinación interesante que no adivinarías a primera vista a menos que la probaras.
Pero la razón por la que saco esto a colación es porque, por supuesto, la IA podría decidir fácilmente acelerar para alcanzarte o conseguir una ventaja que solo recuperarás con acelerones y buenos derrapes. Pero, al menos en la dificultad Normal, lo principal que notarás es que no suelen quedarse atrás, así que esa fue una de las razones por las que intentamos apuntar a la IA para que no consiguiera más puntos de GP antes de tiempo.

Pero bueno, quizás algún día encuentre gente con la que organizar más carreras. En cualquier caso el juego mola. Sería genial verlo conseguir más pistas en el futuro después de que sólo tiene una nueva copa a través de DLC, pero al menos el paquete es lo suficientemente ordenado para un corredor de arcade cuando tiene más modos que las carreras estándar y ataque contra el tiempo, soporte multijugador para GP y funcionalidad en línea.
