Was thinking what to try out today and then I thought...hey, I haven't played Mario Kart DS in a while, why not that?
And of course, this specific challenge comes from RetroAchievements keeping track of 3-Star Rank completions in Grand Prix...and ONLY 3-Stars for some reason, at least individually - any things you unlock from completing most cups normally still have their own achievements tied to them anyways so you can have some stuff logged from playing normally.
But if you want your badges of Mario Kart mastery, you better get ready to get down to the trenches and make the best out of MKDS's iconic quick miniturbos.
Knowing what it takes [and trying]
Aside from the most obvious requeriment being that you ace all four races in first place, there are a few other metrics hidden that influence on your final rank regardless of if you got all 1st Place finishes. This is a little summary from things I've heard while investigating, things that themselves seem to have been carried over to Mario Kart Wii as some share the specific details of the metrics from it as a basis for what Mario Kart DS does.
Long story short, on top of all 40 points in a Grand Prix [all first place finishes], you need to...
- Try to stay/lead in first place as much as you can
- Avoid driving over offroad too many times [unless you are boosting through it]
- Avoid hitting walls too much [once or twice is fine if you're already doing well, maybe three or four times, but you definitely have to aim to avoid them at all]
- Avoid course obstacles [similar to wall, but obviously more dangerous depending of the track]
- Use a lot of mini-turbos on your race [believable when there are missions in the game that are about that]
- Don't fall off. Not only easy to avoid if you are used to the game...but also the most penalizing action. Do NOT fall off ever.
- And finally, drive your best to finish fast. Reportedly, you get a higher chance the faster you finish tracks, so do your best and avoid losing time from enemy items.
Oh, and if you are doing well in a run following these, even if you have a few wall taps and obstacle hits, then don't give up and see the run until the end. Even if you get a Blue Shell thrown at you in one or two races 😅
But of course, with how that's easier said than done, there are three things that can help you a lot to achieve this - aside from course knowledge and practice:
- Don't forget that items in first place can be your shield to stop Red Shells from inevitably ruining your race. If you got a Banana or Green Shell, you might want to hold on to it for such scenarios.
- This is Mario Kart DS, so using mini-turbos is actually expected for good performance, with how you can rapid fire them if you can wiggle to the sides quick enough to charge one. If you are going with balanced or lightweights, you may want to, if not should [if you can] go for snaking strats - get repeated miniturbos on long and wide straights.
- Don't forget to do the Rocket Start at the start of each race. Aside from reportedly also adding to your points, it obviously helps you start faster...so if you didn't know or remember that, then now you do.
Okay, let's do this.
Switching a gear down before going back to the top
So...I actually started doing runs in Mushroom Cup 150cc, although Yoshi Falls was kind of a choking point on the first few of them due to how easily the AI can overtake you near the end if you forget that it will take the inside with the item boxes falling with the water every time.
I ended up switching to 100cc after needing to cool down from repeated attempts from what felt like aiming for absolute perfection while getting screwed by the tiniest mistakes - only finding out later with said 100cc runs that 3 star doesn't require literal and absolute perfection from avoiding to hit walls and such.
And my first prize would be 100cc Mushroom Cup - which was a relief of a reveal not only not needing to do it again, but also being the proof that even if I had a few hiccups, as long as I could keep a strong lead for most of the races, it was still possible to get a 3-star.
But make no mistake.
They have to be A FEW. If you are eating more than three walls, obstacles and more stupid mistakes like that while thinking you are still safe as long as you drift through tracks fast enough, well...

Well, it wasn't like, a TERRIBLY botched run, but my frustration would be tenfold if I happened to get slapped with a TWO star after a 150cc run where I fought for my life just to finish all races in first or something along those lines.
That Flower Cup mishap was at 100cc, but doesn't change that it is a completely blown run at the end of the day if it isn't 3-Stars...
After a redo though, even when I was a bit nervous after having hit the walls twice in Delfino Plaza, hitting the pinball once or twice at Waluigi Pinball and eating a Blue Shell at both Delfino Plaza and Shroom Ridge, I got the 3 Star I wanted :]
Shifting a gear up for one more
Shell Cup time. Thought it would make sense to try this one for 150cc instead of Mushroom again because the tracks are shorter.
Also took me three attempts or so, with the first finished run ending with 2 stars due to some mayor mishaps, but then I got the winning run and decided to take a break for now because I already feel my left wrist a bit worn out because of the snaking [mainly with how I'm playing on keyboard, so I have to mash A and D a lot when I do because I play WASD], but hey, any progress is better than no progress 😎
Conclusion
So yeah, yet another day where I revisited a game thanks to RetroAchievements for an excuse to follow on a specific challenge - although at least this one is actually tracked by the game itself so it also counts as something I hadn't done before with MKDS but would be cool to aim for with the higher amount of experience I got from other kart racers to this day.
Whether I'll follow up on this next time or if I'll talk on another game that I happened to try out before this is up in the air, but for now, it was neat to poke back at this game that I played a lot as a kid - and I had actually revisited before back in 2021 and 2023 - although only now I realize I haven't actually made a proper review per se of this game...but would be perfect to cap off this journey the day I finish it ðŸ¤

Pero claro, con lo fácil que es decirlo que hacerlo, hay tres cosas que te pueden ayudar mucho a conseguirlo -aparte del conocimiento del recorrido y la práctica-:
- No olvides que los objetos en primer lugar pueden ser tu escudo para evitar que las Conchas Rojas arruinen inevitablemente tu carrera. Si tienes un Plátano o una Concha Verde, quizá quieras aferrarte a ellos para tales escenarios.
- Esto es Mario Kart DS, asà que usar mini-turbos es lo esperado para un buen rendimiento, ya que puedes dispararlos rápidamente si te mueves a los lados lo suficientemente rápido como para cargar uno. Ese percance de la Copa de la Flor fue en 100cc, pero no cambia el hecho de que, al fin y al cabo, es una carrera completamente arruinada si no es de 3 estrellas...

Asà que sÃ, otro dÃa más en el que volvà a visitar un juego gracias a RetroAchievements como excusa para seguir un reto especÃfico, aunque al menos este está controlado por el propio juego, asà que también cuenta como algo que no habÃa hecho antes con MKDS, pero que estarÃa bien intentar con la mayor cantidad de experiencia que he conseguido con otros juegos de carreras de karts hasta la fecha.
Queda en el aire si seguiré con esto la próxima vez o si hablaré de otro juego que probé antes de este, pero por ahora ha sido genial volver a este juego al que jugaba mucho de niño, y que ya habÃa vuelto a visitar en 2021 y 2023 - aunque recién ahora me doy cuenta que en realidad no he hecho una review propiamente dicha de este juego...pero serÃa perfecto para culminar este viaje el dÃa que lo termine ðŸ¤
