Right from the beginning this whole thing stinks, why would hackers use Bitcoin, a public ledger, and now conveniently the funds have been recovered?
Why would a hacker demand Bitcoin in this day and age is beyond me, please if anyone knows why it would be a preferred payment method let me know!
FBI Claims to Have Recovered Private Key
I'm very interested to know how a "private" key is recovered. if it's a noob using a dapp with an exploit, or computer infected with malware, or funds sitting on an exchange wallet to which you don't own the keys I get it.
But an apparent "hacker" didn't know enough to protect a supposedly private key?
"FBI Recovers Private Key for Over 63 Bitcoin, Investigator Says Real-Time Blockchain Surveillance Used"
To me this says "Look how good a job we did, doing our job!". I have to say I think this whole thing stunk to begin with but now that the FBI has come to save the day I'm pretty convinced that something else entirely has happened behind the scenes that we're not being told about.
I'm not going to speculate that the hack was a false flag event, or the ransom from a hacker group was fabricated, I'll never know and don't have evidence to support the claims.
Public Data Exploited?
“With the case of Colonial, investigators ‘followed the coin,’ by exploiting data contained on the Bitcoin blockchain, a public ledger,” the Blockchain Intelligence Group investigator Callahan added.
So following a trail of coins on a public ledger is considered exploiting data, ok.
Then I guess we're all experienced investigators here utilizing the latest exploits available to us, every time we look at a blockchain explorer?
So if I follow this correctly the BTC received by the hackers was conveniently moved to a second wallet, which was then recovered by the FBI.
With the FBI in control of the hackers second wallet, the funds were moved out to a tertiary wallet. Then for some unknown reason 5.9 BTC was returned to the second wallet only to be transferred out to an additional tertiary wallet apx 8 minutes later.
Does this all seem totally legit and plausible?
Ciao for now,
