The other day, on YouTube comments, I had a conversation about Game Developers using AI to develop their games and then monetize them. The general impression of that comment section was "AI is bad" with few people saying otherwise... Here's my take on the topic.
If you're into AI, you may have heard about the concept of Vibe Coding. It's a method of developing apps and games by leaving all the coding work to the AI, and focusing on the high-level design (or vibe) of the project.
It's something that was made possible in the last couple of years due to affordable AI Coding assistants' ability to develop something indistinguishable from a human-written code.
In my opinion, AI code is just another tool in the box. I'm all for good games created by Vibe Coding, but creating good games is VERY hard to do!
If someone is using Vibe Coding as an easy shortcut, chances are the game won't be good.
I tried Vibe Coding for simple applications. The longer the code, the harder it becomes to maintain, even for the best AI. (At least right now, as of Anthropic Calude 3.7!)
So if a Vibe Coded game is released with bugs, chances are it'll never be fixed.
I'm not worried about the games that "try" to be good as much as I'm worried about people who were releasing hundreds of assets flips a month, now having the ability to release thousands of them instead.
...Well, I say that, but I've been thinking for a while about generating my games with AI, or at least using it to improve my already released ones. I'll just try to be as fair as possible about it.
I guess time will tell if this will be a Net Positive or Negative for the gaming industry.
