Budget overruns are common when traveling. It can be for that must-have souvenir or because you overindulged at dinner one night. What happens when there are expenses you weren't expecting? Whatever it may be, these are extra costs you chose to pay for. Those annoying hidden costs can really affect your finances and ruin your trip.
Here are a few typical unforeseen travel costs and what you can do to prevent them.
- Baggage charges
Baggage costs might be confusing, especially if you are traveling with several airlines. If you don't satisfy their specific weight and size requirements, it could cost you a lot of money.
Find out the weight and size restrictions for each airline you plan to use before packing your bag to the brim. Check your ticket to see if your luggage is covered as well. Budget airlines/tickets may not always include free carry-on or even checked baggage!
Invest in a portable luggage scale so you never have overweight luggage again. For an example, my country Nigeria, one could be charged double fee of the original amount, because of the large size of one’s baggage.
- Booking fees for hotels
You locate the ideal hotel in the ideal location, and the cost is reasonable and falls inside your pricing range. When you return to pay for the accommodation, you see the hotel has added "service" and "cleaning" costs, raising the amount above what you had anticipated.
Follow the directions as closely as possible until payment is required to avoid unpleasant surprises. Take note of the total cost but do not submit payment. You will see the full amount, including all fees.
- lodging city fees
In some regions, such as Europe, lodgings may impose a municipal tax. It is referred to as the tourist tax. This can range from two euros per person to a portion of your overall cost. When I arrived at my accommodations, I was frequently asked to make the payment in cash only. I had forgotten about these taxes when I went on my most recent trip, which included a few Airbnb stays, and they threw my budget off.
Don't make the same mistake I did; just ask your hotel or host whether there are any additional fees or tourist taxes, and how much they will cost.
- Uber/Cab fare
There can be extra fees for that transportation from the airport. This usually applies to Uber, but it can also apply to Cabs when there is instability in a nation. For instance, taxi scammers in Paris during the strikes were charging up to 150 euros to enter the city from the airport. In times of high demand, Uber will raise its ride prices.
Know that there are flat charges for taxis and that they must adhere by these in order to avoid spending a ton of money. Learn these prices to avoid being taken advantage of. If Uber is extremely expensive, you might want to consider using the bus, metro, or shuttle instead.
5.Emergencies
While on vacation, the last thing you want to consider is having an emergency, yet that's exactly what we do. If you travel regularly, accidents can happen and most likely will eventually.
Purchase travel insurance for each trip you take to ensure your protection, or pack a credit card for emergencies.
