Hello!
A couple of years ago a friend of mine had moved to Berlin, so I decided to go and visit him, but I wasn't going to stay at his place since he lives with his girlfriend, now his wife, and they were working all day.... I didn't want to intrude.
So I booked the flights, and I booked my accommodation in a hostel called "Generator Berlin". I was checking very well that the area was good, as I have had previous bad experiences in other countries where I stayed in cheap places and then it was scary to go through there at night. 🤣

Hacía un par de años que un amigo mío se había mudado a Berlín, así que decidí ir a visitarle, pero no me iba a quedar en su casa ya que él convive con su novia, ahora actual esposa, y se pasaban el día trabajando... No quería molestar.
Así que reservé los vuelos, y reservé mi hospedaje en un albergue que se llama "Generator Berlin". Estuve revisando muy bien que la zona fuera buena, ya que ya he tenido malas experiencias previas en otros países donde me alojaba en lugares baratos y luego daba miedo pasar por ahí de noche. 🤣
It was not the first, nor the last time I traveled alone but this time I did it differently, because the days before my trip to Berlin, I had used the Couchsurfing app (which at that time was free, now it's 3€ per month) and serves to contact other travelers, or to contact local people who are in the city you are visiting, and who can offer you to stay for free in their home. But not as if it were a hotel, but staying with them and sharing with them, as a cultural exchange.
In my case, I don't like the idea of staying in other people's houses because I want to have the freedom to come and go whenever I want, without schedules. That's why I booked accommodation but, I joined the app to be able to meet someone while my friend was working because there were days when he couldn't stay with me, or he could only stay for a while.
No era la primera, ni la última vez que viajaba sola pero esta vez lo hice de manera diferente. Los días previos a mi viaje a Berlín, había utilizado la app de Couchsurfing (la cual en ese entonces era gratuita, ahora son 3€ al mes) y sirve para contactar con otros viajeros, o bien para contactar con gente local que está en la ciudad que estás visitando, y que pueden ofrecerte alojarte de forma gratuita en su casa. Pero no como si fuera un hotel, sino estando con ellos y compartiendo con ellos, como un intercambio cultural.
En mi caso, no me gusta la idea de quedarme a dormir en casas ajenas ya que quiero tener la libertad de ir y venir cuando yo quiera, sin horarios. Por eso reservé alojamiento pero, me metí a la app para poder quedar con alguien mientras mi amigo estuviese trabajando ya que había días en los que él no podría quedar conmigo, o sólo podría estar un rato.

That's how I contacted four people by Couchsurfing app: Maite, a Spanish girl who was traveling alone also to Berlin; Giuseppe, who was an Italian who lives in Berlin and was willing to receive travelers to show them the city or have a drink (you will find him at the Berlin wall from time to time, as he is usually with a sign "Free Italian hugs" hugging people, very affectionate guy!), Mo, an egyptian Guy.
And finally, Ilias, who came from Greece, and Mesh, who came from London but he is from Bangladesh. With these last two guys I have met again in other countries and we have kept in touch, I hope to see them again in 2023 in Scotland. But it was in Berlin that we met for the first time.
Así fue como contacté con cinco personas usando la app de Couchsurfing: Maite, una chica española que iba a viajar sola también hacia Berlín; Giuseppe, que era un italiano que vive en Berlín y estaba dispuesto a recibir a viajeros para mostrarles la ciudad o tomarse algo (lo encontraréis en el muro de Berlín de vez en cuando, ya que está normalmente con un cartel de "Free italian hugs" abrazando a la gente, ¡muy cariñoso el chico!), Mo, un chico de Egipto
Y por último, Ilias, que venía desde Grecia, y Mesh, que venía desde Londres pero él es de Bangladesh. Con estos dos últimos chicos he vuelto a quedar en otros países y hemos mantenido el contacto, espero poder volver a verles en 2023 en Escocia. Pero fue en Berlín donde nos conocimos por primera vez.
It was the first time I used this app to meet people, I felt like I was using Tinder or something, like a blind date with random people and I was nervous that they were going to kidnap me or one of them was going to be a serial killer.
When I took the flight to Berlin it was in the early morning because it was cheaper (damn Ryanair schedules) and I hadn't slept hardly anything, because previously I had to travel all night from my city (Zaragoza, Spain) to Barcelona by night bus, as I didn't have a direct flight. It was difficult to sleep sitting and listening to the snoring of the guy next to me, whose head was falling on top of me.
Era la primera vez que utilizaba esta aplicación para quedar con gente, me sentía como si estuviera usando Tinder o algo así, como una cita a ciegas con gente random y estaba nerviosa por si iban a secuestrarme o alguno de ellos iba a ser un asesino en serie.
Cuando cogí el vuelo hacia Berlín fue de madrugada ya que era más económico (malditos horarios de Ryanair) y no había dormido apenas nada, porque previamente había tenido que viajar toda la noche desde mi ciudad (Zaragoza, España) hasta Barcelona en bus nocturno, ya que no tenía vuelo directo. Fue complicado dormir estando sentada y escuchando ronquidos del chico de al lado, al que además se le caía la cabeza encima de mí.

Ilias and Mesh had booked the same hostel that I had booked, so that the three of us would be together. Ilias had arrived the night before and was already at the hostel waiting for us. Mesh was going to arrive about an hour before me in the city, so he told me he would wait for me at the airport exit.
I got off the plane feeling like a zombie out of The Walking Dead and with dark circles under my eyes. I had seen the people I was going to meet by photo, and they had seen me, so I guess Mesh recognized me (there weren't many girls around the airport at that hour with half their hair painted purple) and approached me, obviously greeting me with his perfect English learned from living in London, and giving me a mini bottle of Jack Daniels she had bought me. Days before we had talked and I told them that this was my favorite bourbon.
I stayed for a few moments with my mind blocked, trying to react, because I was too asleep to think in Spanish, so imagine to start thinking in English. So I thanked him very much for the gesture of his gift, and apologized for my crappy English carrying a whole day without sleep 🤣.
Ilias y Mesh habían reservado el mismo albergue que reservé yo, para así estar los tres juntos. Ilias había llegado la noche anterior y ya estaba en el albergue esperándonos. Mesh iba a llegar como una hora antes que yo a la ciudad, por lo que me dijo que me esperaría a la salida del aeropuerto.
Bajé del avión sintiéndome un zombie salido de The Walking Dead y con ojeras. Había visto a la gente con la que iba a quedar por foto, y ellos a mí, así que imagino que Mesh me reconoció (no habían muchas chicas por el aeropuerto a esa hora con medio pelo pintado en morado) y se acercó a mí, saludándome obviamente con su perfecto inglés aprendido de vivir en Londres, y regalándome una mini botellita de Jack Daniels que me había comprado. Días previos habíamos hablado y yo les conté que ese era mi bourbon favorito.
Me quedé por unos instantes con la mente bloqueada, intentando reaccionar, porque estaba demasiado dormida como para pensar en español, como para ponerme a pensar en inglés. Así que le agradecí mucho el gesto de su regalo, y me disculpé por mi inglés de mierda llevando un día entero sin dormir 🤣.

Then Mesh told me that he had looked at Google Maps and knew how to get to the hostel. I trusted him, because I was still very sleepy. We didn't quite understand how to take the train in Berlin because they gave us a paper ticket that we had to punch in a machine before getting on it. It was an old mechanism because it wrote in ink the date and time when you punched the ticket, and as I didn't realize it, I left it too long and it wrote twice, one on top of the other. If a conductor caught me, I could be fined for that because the time I took the train was not clearly visible. But I didn't realize this fact until I was already on the train.
Entonces Mesh me dijo que había mirado el Google Maps y sabía cómo llegar al albergue. Yo me fié de él, porque yo seguía con mucho sueño. No entendíamos muy bien cómo funcionaba el tema de coger el tren en Berlín porque nos dieron un ticket de papel que había que picar en una máquina antes de subir a él. Era un mecanismo antiguo porque te escribía con tinta la fecha y hora en la que pasabas el ticket, y como no me di cuenta, lo dejé demasiado rato y me escribió dos veces, una encima de la otra. Si me pillaba algún revisor me podían multar por eso al no verse bien la hora en la que cogí el tren. Pero no me di cuenta de este hecho hasta que ya estaba subida en él.
Well, it turns out that after a while riding the train I start to see that we are getting further and further away from the city, I start to see trees and countryside. I open my google maps and see that we are going in the opposite direction to where we should have been going. I try to explain it to Mesh, trying to remember how to say it in English, I think I said a "We are lost" and I showed him my google maps pointing my finger at the screen.
Bueno, pues resulta que después de un rato montados en el tren empiezo a ver que nos alejamos más y más de la ciudad, empiezo a ver árboles y campo. Abro mi google maps y veo que estamos yendo en la dirección contraria a donde tendríamos que haber ido. Se lo intento explicar a Mesh, intentando recordar cómo se dice en inglés, creo que me salió un "We are lost" y le enseñé mi google maps señalándole con el dedo.
I started to panic, because also nobody inside the train spoke English either 🤣. So we got off and started asking the people who were waiting at the stop where we got off: No success either. A kind gentleman took my cell phone with google translator open and when he saw the keyboard, he asked me: "Spaniard?" and I answered: "Ja, ich bin Spaniard".
He was a slightly older gentleman and he got frustrated because he must be that he couldn't find the letters he wanted to write with, but he told us with signs that we were in the wrong direction (We already knew that, but we wanted to know how to get back, because we didn't understand a thing of what it said on the signs xD). Miraculously a Turkish guy passed by who understood that we were more lost than a fart in a jacuzzi, and helped us with signs to tell us which train we should take to go to the city. There, third time I punched the same ticket in the machine and again I smudged the date and time when I got on the train!
Empecé a entrar en pánico, porque además nadie de dentro del tren hablaba inglés tampoco 🤣. Así que nos bajamos y empezamos a preguntarle a la gente que estaba esperando en la parada donde nos habíamos bajado: No hubo éxito tampoco. Un amable señor cogió mi móvil con el traductor de google abierto y al ver el teclado, me preguntó: "Spaniard?" Y yo: "Ja, ich bin Spaniard".
Era un señor un poco mayor y se frustró porque debe ser que no encontraba las letras con las que quería escribir, pero nos dijo con señas que estábamos en la dirección equivocada (Ya lo sabíamos, pero queríamos saber cómo volver, porque no entendíamos ni papa de lo que ponía en los carteles xD). Milagrosamente pasó un chico turco que entendió que estábamos más perdidos que un pedo en un jacuzzi, y nos ayudó mediante señas para decirnos cuál tren debíamos coger para ir hacia la ciudad. ¡Hala, tercera vez que piqué con el mismo ticket en la máquina esa y volví a emborronar la fecha y hora en la que monté en el tren!
We had booked a free walking tour and in the end we were going to be late. We wrote a whatsapp to Ilias to let him know that we were already arriving but that he should go to the free tour and then send us the location of where they were walking, because we were lost with the train. We had to go first to the hostel to check in and leave our backpacks.
A todo esto, habíamos reservado un free walking tour y al final íbamos a llegar tarde. Le escribimos un whatsapp a Ilias para avisar de que ya estábamos llegando pero que fuera acudiendo él al free tour y luego nos mandase la ubicación de por dónde iban caminando, porque nos habíamos perdido con el tren. Teníamos que pasar primero por el albergue para hacer el check-in y dejar nuestras mochilas.
We finally arrived at Ilias' place with the free walking tour started. It was a free walking tour in English obviously, so that the three of us could understand it. They took us on a tour of the center. In Europe this kind of free walking tours are very common, in which you then give the money you want voluntarily to the guide. I show you some of the things we saw:

Nos fueron haciendo un recorrido por el centro. En Europa son muy comunes este tipo de tours gratuitos a pie, en los que luego le das el dinero que quieras de manera voluntaria al guía. Bebelplatz, the square where the Third Reich book burning occurred (German: "Drittes Reich") is the name of the historical period and is used as a synonym for Nazi Germany. A glass plaque set into the cobblestones of the street, and below it an illuminated subway room with empty bookshelves.
Bebelplatz, la plaza donde ocurrió la quema de libros por parte del Tercer Reich( En alemán: "Drittes Reich") es el nombre del período histórico y se utiliza como sinónimo para la Alemania nazi. Una placa de vidrio colocada en los adoquines de la calle, y debajo de ella una sala subterránea iluminada con estanterías vacías.

The monument shows what is missing. Subway, almost out of sight, without books, empty white shelves, directly under the Bebelplatz. What was lost and burned were the books of those whom the Nazis ostracized and persecuted, who had to leave the country and whose stories could no longer be told. Symbolically, the subway shelves have space for some 20,000 books, as a reminder of the 20,000 books that went up in flames on Bebelplatz on May 10, 1933. In the middle of the square on May 10, 1933, Nazi students burned the works of hundreds of independent authors, journalists, philosophers and academics. Israeli artist Micha Ullman designed the library's memorial, which was unveiled on March 20, 1995.
Two bronze plaques also set in the ground contain information and an inscription with the warning:
"That was but a prelude;
where they burn books,
ultimately they will also burn people."

El monumento muestra lo que falta. Subterráneo, casi fuera de la vista, sin libros, estantes blancos vacíos, directamente debajo de la Bebelplatz. Lo que se perdió y se quemó fueron los libros de aquellos a quienes los nazis condenaron al ostracismo y la persecución, que tuvieron que abandonar el país y cuyas historias ya no se podían contar. Simbólicamente, las estanterías subterráneas tienen espacio para unos 20.000 libros, como recuerdo de los 20.000 libros que ardieron en llamas en Bebelplatz el 10 de mayo de 1933. En medio de la plaza, el 10 de mayo de 1933, estudiantes nazis quemaron las obras de cientos de autores independientes, periodistas, filósofos y académicos. After talking and getting to know my new travel companions (Maite, the Spanish girl, arrived the next day in Berlin) and walking around the city, we found out that the Oktoberfest had already started in Germany. In Berlin they had put up a tent and the entrance, unlike in my country, was free and you only had to pay for the beers you ordered.
Después de estar hablando y conociendo a mis nuevos compañeros de viaje (Maite, la chica española creo que llegó al día siguiente a Berlín) y de estar paseando un poco por la ciudad, nos encontramos con que en Alemania ya había comenzado la Oktoberfest. En Berlín habían puesto una carpa y la entrada, a diferencia de en mi país, era gratuita y sólo había que pagar por las cervezas que pidieras.

We were asked to pay a deposit of 5 or 6€ when we ordered our first pitcher of beer in case the pitcher broke or was stolen haha. If you returned the mug safe and sound when you left, they refunded the deposit again.
There were also food stands, with chicken, sauerkraut salad or cabbage.... I was so sleepy that I forgot to eat my dinner. Ilias and Mesh did get up and filled some plastic plates with some food, but I wanted to rest sitting down and I was saving the place, and I said "later I will go for food" and in the end, I forgot.
Nos solicitaron una fianza de 5 o 6€ no recuerdo bien, al pedir nuestra primera jarra de cerveza por si acaso la jarra se rompía o la robabas jaja. Si devolvías la jarra sana y salva cuando te fueras, te devolvían de nuevo la fianza.
También habían puestos de comida, con pollo, ensalada de chukrut o col... Yo estaba con tanto sueño que se me olvidó cenar. Ilias y Mesh sí que se levantaron y rellenaron unos platos de plástico con un poco de comida, pero yo quería descansar sentada y estuve guardando el sitio, y dije "después iré a por comida" y al final, se me olvidó.
I was surprised that the jugs were huge, I don't know how many liters they were but they weighed so much that I had to lift it with both hands to drink from it. I drank I think one, or one and a half and it was enough to get my alcohol up a bit 🤣 also without having had dinner.
Me sorprendió que las jarras eran enormes, no sé de cuantos litros eran pero pesaban tanto que tenía que levantarla con ambas manos para poder beber de ella. Me bebí creo que una, o una y media y fue suficiente para que me subiera un poco el alcohol 🤣 además sin haber cenado.

It was an intense day, and I still had to see my friend who was getting off work late. He came over to the hostel where I was staying, and also spent some time talking with Ilias and Mesh. Then they both went inside the hostel and I stayed longer chatting with my friend and drinking a few more beers in the bar that was inside the hostel, until I was tired and sleepy, so I said goodbye to him and went to sleep in my bunk. This was a summary of my first day in this country, land of good industrial metal like Rammstein, Oomph or Eisbrecher, good beers, and a lot of history.
Fue un día intenso, y todavía me quedaba ver a mi amigo que salía tarde de trabajar. Él se acercó al albergue donde me alojaba, y estuvo un rato también hablando con Ilias y Mesh. Luego ellos dos se metieron dentro del albergue y yo me quedé más rato charlando con mi amigo y tomando unas cervezas más en el bar que estaba dentro del hostel, hasta que ya el cansancio y el sueño me vencía, por lo que me despedí de él y me fui a dormir a mi litera. Este fue un resumen de mi primer día en este país, tierra de buen metal industrial como Rammstein, Oomph o Eisbrecher, de buenas cervezas, y de mucha historia.
