Grandma was loved by all especially the children in the village. This was not just for her delicious cooking and freebies which these kids enjoy but for her delightful stories. Twice every week, she would gather all the children, place a mat on the ground and ask them to sit down while she would sit on her rocking chair and begin telling her wonderful stories. You could tell the children were all enchanted by the silence that prevailed everywhere. No one dared to make a sound for fear of interrupting the stories grandma was narrating. I bet if a pin fell, it would be heard.
I was only nine years old, when I decided to sit in on one of grandma's story telling sessions. I think I became envious of the other kids who always enjoyed listening to my grandma's stories without me. I didn't grow up in the village but I usually spent all my school holidays there. That fateful day, I sat down beside Jenny a playate, eagerly waiting to listen to grandmas stories but unlike the other times when she would begin with a song, grandma wore a grim expression and began to talk to us about mummy-water.
She said that the mummy-water, was regarded as the queen of the ocean and the fishes were her children. Grandma said that she has the appearance of a half-woman and half-fish. She allowed humans to catch some type of fishes for food while some particular type of fishes were forbidden to be caught. She said that as long as there is a river or sea around, the mummy-water can capture anyone who breaks her rules.
"Grandma, what type of fish is forbidden by this mummy-water?" I asked innocently.
"The cat fish my dear. You must not catch, kill or eat a cat fish for they are the special children of the mummy-water" she replied.
Grandma's story that fateful day was so scary that I refused going to the village river to play with the other kids the next day and it has been like that up till now. Even after many yers and I still dread large bodies of water. Whenever I walk on a bridge across a river, I do my best nit to look down or I will fwwl like falling into the water. I can't even go on a boat cruise, hehe that's how bad it is.
Thanks to education, I have realized that the story was a myth and the mummy-water is called mermaid. I wonder who told grandma that things like this exist and how would she react if she discovered that they were untrue.
The myth about mermaids is still unclear. Scientifically, it has not been proven that such a species exist (last time I asked google) but many locals and tribesmen claim to have sighted one at a point in time in their lives. Some people claim that these mermaids are water spirits who lure people to their death when they are angry but also grant immense riches when they are pleased. I know about some tribes that worship the major river in their community simply because of the belief in a water spirit.
Similarly, the world of cartoons are not left out as they portray mermaid characters in cute forms for kids watching to enjoy. A very popular one is the Barbie mermaid cartoons.
The mermaid myth made me to dread eating cat fish for a long time, even when people say that tastes delicious. It wasn't until recently that I began to try eating cat fish and even then, it was prepared by someone else. I can't go near it, hehe.
I'm glad I'm over the myth but back then it was funny and please never take me near large bodies of water or I would faint from fright.

Todos querían a la abuela, especialmente los niños del pueblo. No sólo por su deliciosa cocina y sus obsequios, de los que estos niños disfrutan, sino también por sus deliciosas historias.
Dos veces por semana, reunía a todos los niños, colocaba una estera en el suelo y les pedía que se sentaran mientras ella se sentaba en su mecedora y empezaba a contar sus maravillosas historias. Se notaba que todos los niños estaban encantados por el silencio que reinaba en todas partes. Nadie se atrevía a hacer ruido por miedo a interrumpir las historias que narraba la abuela. Apuesto a que si cayera un alfiler, se oiría.
Sólo tenía nueve años cuando decidí asistir a una de las sesiones de cuentos de mi abuela. Creo que empecé a envidiar a los otros niños, que siempre disfrutaban escuchando las historias de mi abuela sin mí. No me crié en el pueblo, pero solía pasar allí todas mis vacaciones escolares. Aquel fatídico día, me senté junto a Jenny a jugar, esperando ansiosamente escuchar los cuentos de la abuela, pero a diferencia de otras veces, cuando empezaba con una canción, la abuela puso una expresión adusta y empezó a hablarnos de mamá-agua.
Decía que la momia-agua era considerada la reina del océano y que los peces eran sus hijos. La abuela decía que tenía el aspecto de ser mitad mujer y mitad pez. Permitía a los humanos capturar algunos tipos de peces para comer, mientras que otros estaban prohibidos. Decía que mientras hubiera un río o un mar cerca, la mujer-agua podía capturar a cualquiera que se saltara sus reglas.
"Abuela, ¿qué tipo de pez está prohibido por esta momia-agua? ", pregunté inocentemente.
El pez gato, querida. No debes pescar, matar ni comer un pez gato, porque son los hijos especiales de la momia de agua ", respondió.
La historia de la abuela aquel fatídico día me dio tanto miedo que al día siguiente me negué a ir al río del pueblo a jugar con los otros niños, y así ha sido hasta ahora. Incluso después de muchos años, sigo temiendo las grandes masas de agua. Siempre que camino por un puente que cruza un río, hago todo lo posible por no mirar hacia abajo o me dan ganas de caerme al agua. Ni siquiera puedo hacer un crucero en barco, jeje.
Gracias a la educación, me he dado cuenta de que la historia era un mito y la momia-agua se llama sirena. Me pregunto quién le habrá contado a la abuela que existen cosas así y cómo reaccionaría si descubriera que son falsas.
El mito de las sirenas sigue sin estar claro. Científicamente, no se ha demostrado que existan (la última vez que pregunté en Google), pero muchos lugareños y miembros de tribus afirman haber avistado una en algún momento de su vida. Algunas personas afirman que estas sirenas son espíritus del agua que atraen a la gente a la muerte cuando están enfadadas, pero que también conceden inmensas riquezas cuando están complacidas. Sé de algunas tribus que veneran el río principal de su comunidad simplemente por la creencia en un espíritu acuático.
El mundo de los dibujos animados tampoco se queda al margen, ya que presentan personajes de sirenas con formas simpáticas para disfrute de los niños. Uno de los más populares son los dibujos animados de sirenas Barbie.
El mito de la sirena me hizo temer comer pez gato durante mucho tiempo, incluso cuando la gente dice que sabe delicioso. No fue hasta hace poco que empecé a probar a comer pez gato e incluso entonces, lo preparaba otra persona. No puedo acercarme a él, jeje.
Me alegro de haber superado el mito pero por aquel entonces me hacía gracia y por favor nunca me acerques a grandes masas de agua o me desmayaría del susto.
