Last Saturday, we had our second field trip. It felt a bit like cheating since it was to the nearby beach. Yes, the one that's a few blocks from my house. However, as we were guided by some biologists, it was a completely different experience. What kind of Biologists? Well, a Marine Biologist and a Botanist. Our goal was to learn more about mangroves.
There are four species in total that grow nearby the sea. We saw at least 3 of them and could learn about their functions, their importance and how their forests are a thriving ecosystem. I've travelled a lot in Venezuela and I can recall being around these trees in certain areas like La Restinga in Margarita.
Mangroves are really cool plants that have adapted to live near the sea, but they don't actually live on salt water. Their roots and other mechanisms work as a short of filter for this kind of water. You can actually see salt on their leaves. It's a residue from their transpiration. And since the soil isn't oxygen rich, things tend to ferment bellow the surface. Creating a stench in these areas. However, their roots are also covered in a cork, preventing any toxins from getting into the plant.
It's an amazing thing to learn more about these trees that I've seen so many times and knew too little. Now, I can understand why we need to preserve them. Mangrove forests are important since they can help reduce the speed of the wind during storms, hurricanes and else. As they work as a windshield. Besides, their roots prevent the erosion of the soil were they grow. And also, raise the ground above sea level a little bit each year.
They are also the out of the see component for the birth of coral reefs. As they filter the water that comes from the land into the sea, the perfect conditions for algae and coral are met.

El sábado pasado tuvimos nuestra segunda salida de campo. Se sintió un poco extraño que fuera hacia un lugar que me queda tan cerca de la casa. Sí, fue a la playa que está a unas cuadras de mi casa. Sin embargo, bajo la tutela de un Botánico y una Biólogo Marino, fue una experience enriquecedora. Fuimos a la playa a aprender sobre los mangles.
Existen 4 especies de esta planta en Venezuela. Todas crecen cerca del mar. Vimos 3 de ellas y aprendimos de sus funciones, importancia en el ecosistema y cómo sus bosques están llenos de vida. He viajado mucho por Venezuela y he visto varios bosques de mangles en distintos lugares como en La Restinga en Margarita.
Los magles son muy inreresantes. Viven cerca del mar, pero no necesitan de agua salada. Sus raíces tienen mecanismos para filtrar el agua. Además, la sal que pasa a sus sistemas es excratada por sus hojas durante su transpiración. Puedes ver algo de eso si te acercas al árbol. Como el oxígeno es prácticamente inexistente en su suelo, la materia orgánica se fermenta. Esto da lugar a la aparición de sustancias tóxicas para la planta. Por eso, han desarrollado raíces cubiertas de corcho para evitar absorver estas. También es común que cerca de los mangles no haya muy buen olor.
Es increíble aprender tanto de unos árboles que había visto tantas veces. Ahora sé por qué es necesario protegerlos. Los bosques de mangles son un escudo contra viento huracanados y tormentas. Pueden reducir la velocidad del viento. Además. sus raíces evitan la erosión del suelo y también elevan el suelo donde están plantados sobre el nivel del mar un poco cada año que pasa.
Como dato final, los mangles son un componente importante de los arrecifes de coral. Como filtran el agua que viene de la tierra hacia el mar, crean las condiciones perfectas para el crecimiento de algas y corales.
