It's from hive that I discovered we are all the same. We are one people, sharing the same behavioural patterns and culture. It's even more interesting because we have these prompts from various communities which exposes us to various lifestyles across the globe. It is one of these prompts from the ladies of hive community that got me exposed to several cooking styles, methods and dishes that I originally thought oh! It's an African thing and can only be found in Africa or Nigeria if I'm more specific. You know the saying, you never really know until you go out there? Yeah, that saying was referring to me. Thankfully I found hive and it's been my window to view the world.
In one of the ladies of hive prompts, we were asked to write about our native dishes and then I was reading other entries and I saw one from Venezuela. I think it is called tamales, corn pudding wrapped in banana leaves. I quickly rushed to the ingredients plus the preparation process and my jaw dropped because we have almost that same meal in Nigeria and it's one of my favourites. One difference is that ours here is made with palm oil and more overly ripe plantain puree. We could either use unripe plantain flour as a holding or binding agent for the pudding or we use corn meal.
Another slight twist that made the difference is the stuffing of proteins in the tamales. While the ones made and consumed in Southern America are stuffed with chicken, pork or beef, the one that we do in my country is made by adding grinded dried crayfish to the mix or whole dried prawns.
We could also use the leaf of a plant known as Thaumatococcus daniellii (which is popularly known as moimoi leaf in Nigeria) for the wrapping in place of banana leaves and oh! instead of Tamales, we call it Ukpo-ogede.
Again, from this prompt, The impact of African culture in Latin America I have come to know about other dishes that we share in common like the Pabellón Criollo (Rice, beans and plantain).
It's quite intriguing to come to the realisation that across the globe in another continent, there are people who share our cuisine style and I might not be aware yet of other things that we share in common but I know that aside from cuisine, there must be other aspects of life that both Africans and Latin Americans share in common.
Basically, so long we share things together, we can be considered as a family and we all know what the term family stands for; Unity, Love, Trust and Cooperation all of which are evident in how the world has come to mix despite the processes of which that mixture came to be. Boy! Would it be boring if we didn't have diversity, if we only had our own race occupying a place without sharing it with another. We would be oblivious of what it means to actually cohabitate and then there will be no marriage of culture.
You know, despite the negativity that came with colonialism, I am one person who thought it did more good than harm. For what it's worth, it united the world and brought about some advanced ways of living. Not only that but in a way, we found ourselves complimenting each other and strengthening our weaknesses.

Es de colmena que descubrí que todos somos iguales. Somos un solo pueblo y compartimos los mismos patrones de comportamiento y cultura. Es aún más interesante porque tenemos estas indicaciones de varias comunidades que nos exponen a diversos estilos de vida en todo el mundo. Es una de estas sugerencias de las damas de la comunidad Hive la que me expuso a varios estilos, métodos y platos de cocina que originalmente pensé ¡oh! Es algo africano y sólo se puede encontrar en África o Nigeria si soy más específico. ¿Conoces el dicho: nunca lo sabes realmente hasta que sales? Sí, ese dicho se refería a mí. Afortunadamente encontré Hive y ha sido mi ventana para ver el mundo.
En una de las indicaciones de las damas de Hive, nos pidieron que escribiéramos sobre nuestros platos nativos y luego estaba leyendo otras entradas y vi una de Venezuela. Creo que se llama tamales, budín de maíz envuelto en hojas de plátano. Rápidamente me apresuré a analizar los ingredientes y el proceso de preparación y me quedé boquiabierto porque tenemos casi la misma comida en Nigeria y es una de mis favoritas. Una diferencia es que el nuestro está hecho con aceite de palma y puré de plátano demasiado maduro. Podemos usar harina de plátano verde como agente aglutinante para el pudín o usamos harina de maíz.
Otro pequeño giro que marcó la diferencia es el relleno de proteínas en los tamales. Mientras que los que se elaboran y consumen en Sudamérica son rellenos de pollo, cerdo o ternera, el que hacemos en mi país se elabora añadiendo a la mezcla cangrejos secos molidos o langostinos secos enteros.
También podríamos usar la hoja de una planta conocida como Thaumatococcus daniellii (que se conoce popularmente como hoja de moimoi en Nigeria) para envolver en lugar de hojas de plátano y ¡oh! en lugar de Tamales, lo llamamos Ukpoogede.

Básicamente, mientras compartamos cosas juntos, podemos ser considerados como una familia y todos sabemos lo que significa el término familia; Unidad, Amor, Confianza y Cooperación, todos los cuales son evidentes en cómo el mundo ha llegado a mezclarse a pesar de los procesos por los cuales se produjo esa mezcla. ¡Chico! ¿Sería aburrido si no tuviéramos diversidad, si sólo tuviéramos nuestra propia raza ocupando un lugar sin compartirlo con otra? Ignoraríamos lo que significa realmente cohabitar y entonces no habría matrimonio cultural.
Sabes, a pesar de la negatividad que vino con el colonialismo, soy una persona que pensó que hacía más bien que mal. Por si sirve de algo, unió al mundo y generó algunas formas de vida avanzadas. No solo eso, sino que, en cierto modo, nos encontramos felicitándonos unos a otros y fortaleciendo nuestras debilidades.
