Hey Hive Gaming! Here I am back and this time with the second part of my series of posts about all the elements that make a game a work of art. In the first post I talked about the influence of music and sounds as one of the most important elements in a video game, now I'm going to talk about what I consider as the second most important art to form these works of art, and of course, that art is literature.

I already mentioned the importance of music, but why is literature even more important than painting in this art? I think that no matter how beautiful your game can be, if the story is not worth it, the game is not worth it either, and to become a true work of art it must have all the elements that make it so without exception.
I take as an example the case of many heartless AAAs from multi-million dollar companies that don't give a damn about their buyers. The game can be totally beautiful visually and have graphics that look even better than reality itself, but they are games that only seek to sell for the graphics, and not because it actually has a story worth exploring and knowing. A world full of empty NPCs and a typical linear story of "save the world because you are the hero", is simply an empty game.
The video game industry, like the movie industry, has been corrupted by the greed of human beings, creating works that only seek to sell or exploiting franchises until they are no more. All these "works" have stories so empty, repetitive and predictable that they are practically all the same, and only seek to sell enough so that executives can continue to keep their pockets full.

Visuals are never everything, and while I have been very critical of most AAA industries, there are still the minority of AAA game companies that continue to create true works of art, and over the years have left even more works of art in their wake, such as games like The Last Of Us, Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space, and hundreds of other games that fulfill all the perfect aspects to be pure works of art, and have stories that surpass the same cinema, and even games like The Last Of Us have achieved film adaptations that are really worth enjoying and does true honor to the game.
Of course, within the indie world it is much more common to find games with extremely captivating stories, being games that have much more heart for having been made by very small groups of developers or people with too many dreams and too much desire to turn them on their own into a true work of art.
Many times graphics are not everything, and indies are the exact proof of that. There are countless games that graphically can be a bit hard to digest, but have extremely complex and beautiful stories. One game that I take as the perfect example of what I'm talking about is Milk Inside a Bag Of Milk and Milk Outside a Bag Of Milk, which although they are two different games, they are actually one and practically play one right after the other.
I already talked about this game in a previous post in case you want to take a look at it. At first I made the big mistake of judging a book by its cover, from seeing screenshots that showed a really ugly game, and well it had a name and looked like it was one of those typical 50 cent Steam games that are terrible and look more like a powerpoint than a decent game. One day my friend @rishahp recommended it to me, so I decided to play it and I got the surprise of my life.
The game graphically in the first part is horrible, but once you start playing it you realize how incredibly complicated its story is, and how every tiny detail is well thought out. Every color and design you see during the game, has its own language to explain you the psychology of the protagonist, and this mixed with a simply amazing story, form a work of art that I feel anyone who loves complex stories should play.
Milk outside a bag of milk and milk inside a bag of milk show you the perfect way to express the psychology and the world of a protagonist through dialogues full of mysteries and a plot that you have to excavate little by little, and discovering all its 5 endings, you will start to question yourself and discover more and more about the complicated mind of the protagonist.
This is an example of a game that doesn't need to tell you everything to get you interested in its story, and it's an element that can only be done in video games. Your own creativity and curiosity to put the pieces of the puzzle together is what will let you know the true message of the game. I find it amazing how well thought out the game is enough to make each person draw different conclusions about the meaning of the story, and this is one of the reasons why the story has so much power over the graphics and gameplay, it is what shapes and builds the complexity of a work so that it can have the ability to make you really connect with its story.
On the other hand, there are games that graphically are not the fifth wonder of the world, but still their art is simply beautiful and manage to convey unique colors and feelings. I will mention a different example than the one I did in the previous post with One Shot, because although it is a beautiful game visually, musically and literary I can not take it as an example in every post of this series (Although I am capable of doing it hahahahah), so to give more variety to the subject I will mention a game that I have not talked about in any post, and I think a great example of what I mean, a game that captivates you visually and has a very complex story including various social and political problems, covering them in a perfect way, in a very entertaining game.
Not Tonight is a true work of art, I met him on the recommendation of an old friend who I remember recommended it to me so many times that I ended up deciding to play it after receiving a free Key of it on Steam. I hadn't made any Spoiler, and I didn't even know what it was about and I played it with a clear mind, and obviously I ended up finding myself with a true masterpiece.
The game tells the story of a case where a far right government has taken power, decides to secede from all of europe and create an independent republic. In this story there are too complex social and political burdens, but without much knowledge on the subject you can understand. Practically the country turns into total chaos and all people of European origin are expelled from the country or sent to separate residential blocks from English citizens.
In the middle of a confusion with your papers, you are mistaken for a European citizen, you are not allowed to give explanations and you are sent to one of the blocks for "Euros". The game is a clear message about xenophobia, dictatorships, racism and classism, where for being "Euro" (term assigned in a derogatory way by English citizens and politicians), you will have to endure bad treatment, incredibly low wages where an Englishman is paid $ 600 for doing the same and you are paid $ 50, where you live threatened by being deported and practically live being denigrated for being from another country and even not being welcomed in many businesses.
During the story you must work as a security guard, check documents and deny entries in the purest style of Papers Please, and in fact it is a total tribute to it, because it has many similarities with its message and gameplay. Through your job as a guard, you will be able to meet all kinds of people, get attached to incredibly well-done characters and personalities worth knowing, advance day by day seeing how the government is threatening more and more Europeans and get to know a unique story with many important messages about society, and I think that is more important than anything else. A story that contributes to an important thought about an issue that is not given much attention is a perfect way to raise awareness and that is something that is sorely lacking nowadays.
And ending the topic of politically charged stories, I will mention my last example and it is the case of Bioshock. This is a game that is graphically spectacular and the pure proof of a AAA work made with real heart, and with an incredible story in between with many important messages about politics and society. Of course, I talked about this game in a past post so I won't go into so much detail, stop by that post if you're interested in reading my review about the game.
Bioshock puts us in a wonderful underwater world, a utopian city that sought to escape from the clutches of all the politicians of the modern world, as well as create an ideal society in which all people can enjoy the fruits of their labor and have all the freedom of expression that they did not have in the ordinary world and in terrestrial cities.
The story handles a beautiful and quite complex visual language, each scenario tells a story and each character expands this story. The NPCs have an incredible personality and stop feeling like robots and become real characters and enemies that are fun to listen to and fight.
Every tape and every dialogue in all the zones throughout the game, help you understand what happened at the site, and all the playable resources are extremely well used and make it a practically perfect game.
The game contains a pretty important message about being human, and that is that by having all the freedom you want and being free from governments and such, always greed and power is going to end up corrupting everyone. It is quite hard to realize the message of the story, since you realize that even if the human being is planning to create a perfect world, there will always be those who end up corrupting and destroying a utopia created to try to free humans from oppression. In the end, even if you have all this freedom, there will always be those who want to take advantage of it to do evil.
As you may have noticed, the story is a very important factor above all other factors along with the music, and they have also managed to prove that with beautiful graphics, enjoyable or just visually horrible, you can express a complex story and really leave a mark that will not be erased with the passage of time.
Games are the only ones capable of leaving marks in history and in people's lives and this makes them a work of art, time does not affect the art and neither these incredible stories in games that go beyond the typical hero who goes to save the world from the villain.
A story expressed in a game can have too many loads and important messages, the creativity of the author is the limit, and in certain games, the creativity of the player as well. I know that games will never stop impressing us with their stories and there will still be infinite stories to tell, that only a true artist and genius can write and create.

Ya mencioné la importancia de la música, pero ¿Por qué la literatura es aún más importante que la pintura en este arte? Yo pienso de que no importa que tan hermoso puede ser tu juego, si la historia no vale la pena, el juego tampoco lo es, y para entrar a ser una verdadera obra de arte debe tener todos los elementos que lo convierten en esto sin excepción.
Tomo como ejemplo el caso de muchos AAA sin corazón de empresas multimillonarias que les importan un comino sus compradores. El juego puede ser totalmente hermoso visualmente y tener unos gráficos que se vean incluso mejor que la propia realidad, pero son juegos que solo buscan vender por los gráficos, y no porque de verdad tenga una historia que valga la pena explorar y conocer. Un mundo lleno de NPCs vacíos y una historia lineal típica de "salva al mundo porque eres el héroe", es sencillamente un juego vacío.
La industria de los videojuegos al igual que el cine, se ha terminado corrompiendo por la codicia del ser humano, creando obras que solo buscan vender o explotando franquicias hasta que ya no den para más. Todas estas "obras" tienen historias tan vacías, repetitivas y predecibles que prácticamente son todas iguales, y solo buscan vender lo suficiente para que los ejecutivos puedan seguir manteniendo los bolsillos llenos.

Lo visual nunca lo es todo y aunque he criticado mucho a la mayoría de las industrias AAA, aún existe la minoría de empresas de juegos AAA que siguen creando auténticas obras de arte, y con el pasar de los años han dejado aún más obras de arte por su camino, como pueden ser juegos como The Last Of Us, Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space, y cientos de juegos más que cumplen con todos los aspectos perfectos para ser obras de arte puras, y cuentan con historias que llegan a superar al mismo cine, e incluso juegos como The Last Of Us han conseguido adaptaciones al cine que de verdad valen la pena disfrutar y le hace verdadero honor al juego.
Por supuesto, dentro del mundo indie es mucho más común encontrar juegos con historias extremadamente cautivadoras, por ser juego que tienen mucho más corazón por haber sido hechos por grupos muy pequeños de desarrolladores o personas con demasiados sueños y muchas ganas de convertirlos por su cuenta en una verdadera obra de arte.
Muchas veces los gráficos no son todo, y los indies son la prueba exacta de ello. Es innumerable la cantidad de juegos que gráficamente pueden llegar a ser un poco difíciles de digerir, pero que cuentan con historias extremadamente complejas y hermosas. Un juego que tomo como el perfecto ejemplo de lo que estoy diciendo es Milk Inside a Bag Of Milk y Milk Outside a Bag Of Milk, que aunque sean dos juegos distintos, en realidad son uno solo y prácticamente se juegan uno seguido del otro.
De este juego ya hablé en un post anterior por si quieren echarle un vistazo. Al principio cometí el gran error de juzgar a un libro por su portada, por ver las capturas que mostraban un juego de verdad feo, y pues tenía nombre y pinta de que era uno de estos típicos juegos de 50 centavos de Steam que son terribles y parecen más un powerpoint que un juego decente. Un día mi amigo @rishahp me lo recomendó, así que decidí jugarlo y me llevé la sorpresa de mi vida.
El juego gráficamente en la primera parte es horrible, pero una vez que empiezas a jugarlo te das cuenta de lo increíblemente complicada que es su historia, y como cada mínimo detalle está bien pensado. Cada color y diseño que ves durante el juego, tiene su propio lenguaje para explicarte la psicología de la protagonista, y esto mezclado con una historia simplemente increíble, forman una obra de arte que siento que debería jugar cualquier persona que ame las historias complejas.
Milk outside a bag of milk y milk inside a bag of milk te enseñan la forma perfecta de expresar la psicología y el mundo de un protagonista a través de diálogos llenos de misterios y una trama que debes ir excavando poco a poco, y descubriendo todos sus 5 finales, empezarás a cuestionarte a ti mismo y descubrir más y más acerca de la complicada mente de la protagonista.
Este es un ejemplo de un juego que no necesita contarte todo para que te intereses en su historia, y es un elemento que solo se puede hacer en los videojuegos. Tu propia creatividad y curiosidad por armar las piezas del rompecabezas es lo que te va a hacer conocer el verdadero mensaje del juego. Me parece increíble lo bien pensado que está el juego como para hacer que cada persona saque conclusiones distintas sobre el significado de la historia, y esta es una de las razones por las que la historia tiene tanto poder por encima de los gráficos y la jugabilidad, es lo que forma y construye la complejidad de una obra para que pueda tener la capacidad de hacerte conectar realmente con su historia.
Por otro lado, están los juegos que gráficamente no son la quinta maravilla del mundo, pero igual su arte es sencillamente hermoso y logran transmitir colores y sentimientos únicos. Mencionaré un ejemplo distinto al que hice en el anterior post con One Shot, porque aunque es un juego hermoso visual, musical y literariamente pues no puedo tomarlo como ejemplo en cada post de esta serie (Aunque soy capaz de hacerlo jajajaj), así que para darle más variedad al asunto mencionaré a un juego del que no he hablado en ningún post, y me parece un gran ejemplo de lo que comento, un juego que te cautiva visualmente y tiene una historia bastante compleja incluyendo diversos problemas sociales y políticos, abarcándolos de una forma perfecta, en un juego demasiado entretenido.
Not Tonight es una verdadera obra de arte, lo conocí por recomendación de un viejo amigo que recuerdo que me lo recomendó tantas veces que terminé decidiéndome por jugarlo después de recibir una Key gratis de éste en Steam. No me había hecho ningún Spoiler, y no sabía siquiera de que trataba y lo jugué con la mente limpia, y obviamente terminé encontrándome con una verdadera obra maestra.
El juego cuenta la historia de un caso en el que un gobierno de extrema derecha ha tomado el poder, decide separarse de toda europa y crear una república independiente. En esta historia hay unas cargas sociales y políticas demasiado complejas, pero que sin muchos conocimientos sobre el tema puedes entender. Prácticamente el país se torna en un total caos y todas las personas de origen europeo son expulsadas del país o enviadas a bloques de residencias separados de los ciudadanos ingleses.
En medio de una confusión con tus papeles, te confunden por un ciudadano europeo, no te permiten dar explicaciones y te envían a uno de los bloques para "Euros". El juego es un claro mensaje acerca de la xenofobia, las dictaduras, el racismo y el clasismo, donde por ser "Euro" (Término asignado de forma despectiva por los ciudadanos y políticos ingleses), tendrás que soportar malos tratos, salarios increíblemente bajos donde a un inglés le paguen 600$ por hacer lo mismo y a ti te paguen 50$, donde vivas amenazado por ser deportado y prácticamente vivir siendo denigrado por ser de otro país y hasta no ser recibido en muchos negocios.
Durante la historia debes trabajar como guardia de seguridad, revisar documentos y negar entradas al más puro estilo de Papers Please, y de hecho es un total homenaje a éste, por contar con muchas similitudes con su mensaje y jugabilidad. A través de tu trabajo como guardia, podrás encontrarte con todo tipo de personas, encariñarte con personajes increíblemente bien hechos y con personalidades que vale la pena conocer, avanzar día a día viendo como el gobierno va amenazando cada vez más a los europeos y conocer una historia única con muchos mensajes importantes sobre la sociedad, y pienso que eso es más importante que cualquier cosa. Una historia que aporte a un pensamiento importante sobre un tema al cual no se le presta mucha atención, es una forma perfecta para crear conciencia y eso es algo que hace mucha falta actualmente.
Y terminando el tema de las historias con cargas políticas, pues mencionaré mi último ejemplo y es el caso de Bioshock. Este es un juego que es gráficamente espectacular y la pura prueba de una obra AAA hecha con verdadero corazón, y con una historia increíble de por medio con muchos mensajes importantes acerca de la política y la sociedad. Por supuesto, hablé de este juego en un post pasado así que no entraré en tantos detalles, pásense por ese post si les interesa leer mi review acerca del juego.
Bioshock nos pone en un maravilloso mundo bajo el agua, una ciudad utópica que buscaba escapar de las garras de todos los políticos del mundo moderno, así como crear una sociedad ideal en la que todas las personas puedan disfrutar del fruto de su trabajo y tener toda la libertad de expresión que no tenían en el mundo común y en las ciudades terrestres.
La historia maneja un lenguaje visual hermoso y bastante complejo, cada escenario cuenta una historia y cada personaje expande esta historia. Los NPCs tienen una personalidad increíble y dejan de sentirse como robots para pasar a ser verdaderos personajes y enemigos divertidos de escuchar y combatir.
Cada cinta y cada diálogo en todas las zonas a través del juego, te ayudan a comprender lo que ocurrió en el sitio, y todos los recursos jugables son extremadamente bien utilizados y lo convierten en un juego prácticamente perfecto.
El juego contiene un mensaje bastante importante sobre el ser humano, y es que al tener toda la libertad que quieras y estar libre de gobiernos y demás, siempre la codicia y el poder va a terminar corrompiendo a todos. Es bastante duro darte cuenta del mensaje de la historia, puesto que te das cuenta que aunque el ser humano se plantee crear un mundo perfecto, siempre va a haber quien termine corrompiéndose y destruyendo una utopía creada para intentar liberar al humano de la opresión. Al final aunque tengas toda esta libertad siempre va a haber quien quiera aprovecharse de ésta para hacer el mal.
Como pueden haberse dado cuenta, la historia es un factor muy importante sobre todos los demás factores junto a la música, y también han logrado comprobar que con gráficos hermosos, disfrutables o simplemente horribles visualmente, se puede expresar una historia compleja y que de verdad deje una marca que no sea borrada con el paso del tiempo.
Los juegos son los únicos capaces de dejar marcas en la historia y en la vida de las personas y esto los convierte en una obra de arte, el tiempo no afecta al arte y tampoco a estas historias increíbles en los juegos que van más allá del típico héroe que va a salvar el mundo del villano.
Una historia expresada en un juego puede llegar a tener demasiadas cargas y mensajes importantes, la creatividad del autor es el límite, y en ciertos juegos, la creatividad del jugador también. Sé que los juegos jamás dejarán de impresionarnos con sus historias y aún seguirán existiendo infinitas historias por contar, que solo un verdadero artista y genio puede llegar a escribir y crear.
