One very important concept that I immediately started learning about is the potential value of the SPS (Splintershard) token within the Splinterlands ecosystem. At the beginning of the airdrop, I always thought that the essential function of $SPS was simply that of a common rewards token, and its value was essentially tied to the dynamics of the game.
This is true, but minimally because the potential of the token is really much higher. But let's start from a fundamental concept: governance token.
SPS as Governance Token
$SPS holders, especially those who have locked the token in staking, have the opportunity to participate in some fundamental choices on the development and progress of the game. In #web2 games players are simple passive subjects, they do not participate in the development of the game, they cannot propose proposals to improve some aspects of the game. Splinterlands represents a new category of #web3 games in which players propose and vote for user proposals based on the $SPS staked. Simply see the dedicated section to look at the numerous proposals published so far!
SPS as reward
#web3 means creating games where players are similar to shareholders, earning rewards generally in proportion to how much they spend. It is truly a notable change for players, until now considered as users of paid content, because now with Splinterlands, not only will they be able to decide and vote on community or team proposals, but they will be able to earn rewards, to reinvest or cash in, simply by continuing to do what you like most: play.
$SPS is the token that you can exchange on the entire Hive Engine market or you can convert them into $DEC and continue purchasing cards or objects in the Splinterlands shop, without necessarily having to introduce new personal capital. Many players who have invested significantly in the game, today continue to be leaders by using the rewards deriving from battles or from staking $SPS (an additional reward of just 10% per year between SPS and VOUCHER).
As you can see from all this, $SPS is really much more than just a token.
