The healthcare sector in Brazil has always been viewed favorably. Since childhood, when we ask a child what they want to be when they grow up, the most common answer is still: “I want to be a doctor.” This desire to work in healthcare, more specifically in medicine, is widely shared, which has contributed to a significant increase in the supply of doctors today.
For a long time, the medical profession has been associated with high salaries and prestige. In the past generation, generally only people from wealthy families were able to study medicine. Traditionally, the three most respected and accessible professions for the upper classes were: lawyer, engineer, and doctor.
Over the years, there has been an explosion in the number of professionals in some of these areas, first in law, then in engineering, and more recently, we have seen this phenomenon expand into medicine as well. Every day, shifts are paying less and becoming scarcer, precisely because the number of trained doctors has grown significantly, partly due to the proliferation of private colleges.
At the other end of the chain, we have nurses and, especially, nursing technicians, professionals who do much of the heavy lifting in the healthcare sector. They are the ones who deal directly with patients, bathing them, administering medication, dressing wounds, cleaning waste, among other essential functions. Despite their enormous responsibility, they are the ones who receive the lowest salaries, which are incompatible with the workload they face. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear that this class was on the front lines of the fight against the virus, often without due recognition.
Recently, technicians and nurses in several states across the country went on strike to demand a fairer minimum wage. However, the approval of the minimum wage was marked by delays, political resistance, and interference from the healthcare business sector. When it was finally approved, it came with many caveats and with amounts below expectations.
As it is an essential service, the healthcare system cannot come to a complete standstill, so the strikes were partial and accompanied by occasional demonstrations. Even so, pressure from professionals was fundamental to achieving wage improvements, albeit limited.
Ultimately, I get the impression that, in Brazil, formal workers are undervalued, regardless of their profession. Precarious wages discourage anyone from studying or pursuing a dignified career; it seems that the real financial return lies in pursuing paths such as politics or crime, which is deeply discouraging.
Few manage to succeed in life based solely on their studies, and they are usually those who come from families with good financial conditions, which guarantees them the time and structure to dedicate themselves. This reflection applies not only to the health sector, but also to education. Being a teacher in Brazil, for example, is an undervalued profession, with low salaries and little recognition, which contributes even more to the general disinterest of the population.
The situation in the healthcare sector is just a reflection of a larger problem that affects almost all professions in Brazil: the devaluation of skilled labor. Until there is real investment in education, technical training, public infrastructure, and professional development, the country will continue to experience cycles of demotivation, strikes, and inequality. We need to break with this logic, recognize the value of those who really sustain essential services, and create dignified conditions so that more people can prosper honestly.

O setor de saúde no Brasil sempre foi visto com bons olhos. Desde pequenos, quando perguntamos a uma criança o que ela quer ser quando crescer, a resposta mais comum ainda é: “Quero ser médico”. Esse desejo de trabalhar na área da saúde, mais especificamente na medicina, é amplamente compartilhado, o que tem contribuído para um aumento expressivo na oferta de médicos nos dias atuais.
Durante muito tempo, a profissão de médico foi associada a altos salários e prestígio. Na geração passada, geralmente apenas pessoas de famílias ricas conseguiam cursar medicina. Tradicionalmente, as três profissões mais respeitadas e acessíveis às classes mais altas eram: advogado, engenheiro e médico.
Com o passar dos anos, houve uma explosão no número de profissionais em algumas dessas áreas, primeiro na advocacia, depois na engenharia e, mais recentemente, observamos esse fenômeno se expandindo também na medicina. A cada dia, os plantões estão pagando menos e se tornando mais escassos, justamente porque o número de médicos formados cresceu muito, em parte devido à proliferação de faculdades particulares.
Na outra ponta da cadeia, temos os enfermeiros e, principalmente, os técnicos de enfermagem, profissionais que realizam grande parte do trabalho pesado no setor da saúde. São eles que lidam diretamente com os pacientes, dando banho, aplicando medicamentos, realizando curativos, limpando resíduos, entre outras funções essenciais. Apesar da enorme responsabilidade, são os que recebem os salários mais baixos, incompatíveis com a carga de trabalho que enfrentam. Durante a pandemia da COVID-19, ficou evidente que essa classe esteve na linha de frente do combate ao vírus, muitas vezes sem o devido reconhecimento.
Recentemente, técnicos e enfermeiros em diversos estados do país entraram em greve para reivindicar um piso salarial mais justo. No entanto, a aprovação do piso foi marcada por atrasos, resistências políticas e interferência de setores empresariais da saúde. Quando finalmente aprovado, veio cheio de ressalvas e com valores abaixo do esperado.
Por se tratar de um serviço essencial, o sistema de saúde não pode parar completamente, por isso, as greves foram parciais e acompanhadas de manifestações pontuais. Ainda assim, a pressão dos profissionais foi fundamental para a conquista, mesmo que limitada, de melhorias salariais.
No fim das contas, tenho a impressão de que, no Brasil, o trabalhador formal é pouco valorizado, independentemente da profissão. A precarização salarial desmotiva qualquer um a estudar ou seguir uma carreira digna, parece que o verdadeiro retorno financeiro está em seguir caminhos como a política ou o crime, o que é profundamente desalentador.
Poucos conseguem vencer na vida apenas com base nos estudos, e geralmente são aqueles que vêm de famílias com boas condições financeiras, o que lhes garante tempo e estrutura para se dedicar. Essa reflexão não se aplica apenas à área da saúde, mas também à educação. Ser professor no Brasil, por exemplo, é uma profissão desvalorizada, com baixos salários e pouco reconhecimento, o que contribui ainda mais para o desinteresse geral da população.
A situação do setor da saúde é apenas um reflexo de um problema maior, que atinge quase todas as profissões no Brasil: a desvalorização do trabalho qualificado. Enquanto não houver investimentos reais em educação, formação técnica, estrutura pública e valorização profissional, o país continuará vivendo em ciclos de desmotivação, greves e desigualdade. É preciso romper com essa lógica, reconhecer o valor de quem realmente sustenta os serviços essenciais e criar condições dignas para que mais pessoas possam prosperar honestamente.
