In Brazil, compulsory military service is an obligation for all men who reach the age of 18. Enlistment is a compulsory process and, if a young man does not attend the conscription board when he reaches this age, he will face a number of restrictions that can significantly affect his life. Among the consequences are difficulties in getting a formal job, enrolling in higher education institutions, and even taking up public office if they pass a competitive examination. These limitations aim to ensure that all citizens fulfill their part in military service, or at least are registered on a reserve list in the system.
After enlisting, young people undergo a selection process that includes medical examinations and psychological assessments to determine their suitability for military service. When I enlisted, I went through these stages along with several other young people from my town. The selection process is rigorous and, in the end, only a portion of the candidates are chosen to serve their country for a period of 12 months. In my case, 50 new candidates were selected.
At the time I enlisted, I was deeply involved in my studies. I was studying in three different shifts: during the day (morning and afternoon), I was doing a vocational course in the field of electricity, and in the evening, I was attending high school. Military service would be a big obstacle for me, interrupting my intense routine of studies and commitments. So I was hoping to be exempted and, fortunately, my application was accepted.
In my city, compulsory military service is carried out on a voluntary basis, without any kind of allowance or stipend for soldiers during their period of service. In contrast to other places, where conscripts receive a minimum wage or something close to it, the situation here is much more precarious. The maintenance of the barracks and the soldiers' food are financed by the local town hall. However, reports from friends who served indicate that they often faced difficulties, such as having to take food from home to avoid starvation, due to the lack of funds or food being passed on by the municipality.
Although military service does not offer financial benefits in my city, I believe it is extremely important. Not only does it help prepare young people to defend and support their country, but it also plays a fundamental role in developing more responsible and disciplined citizens. At a time when many young people seem disinterested and irresponsible, military service can provide valuable experiences that shape character and responsibility.
I have two cousins who served in the military by choice and both were very satisfied with the experience, even without receiving any pay. They often express nostalgia for the time they served and, if it had been possible, they would have pursued a military career. The experience of military service transformed them, making them more responsible people with a broader view of the world.
If I could go back in time, I wouldn't change anything about my decision not to serve. At the time of my enlistment, I was already a very responsible and disciplined person, and I didn't miss military service. In fact, not taking part allowed me to follow my path and become who I am today. My cousins' experience showed that, despite the difficulties, military service can provide significant growth for many young people. So, even without having gone through it, I recognize the value and importance of this process for those who have the opportunity to experience it.

O alistamento é um processo obrigatório e, se o jovem não comparecer à junta de recrutamento quando atingir essa idade, enfrentará diversas restrições que podem afetar significativamente sua vida. Entre as consequências estão dificuldades para conseguir um emprego formal, se matricular em instituições de ensino superior, e até mesmo assumir cargos públicos caso passe em um concurso. Essas limitações visam garantir que todos os cidadãos cumpram sua parte no serviço militar, ou ao menos estejam registrados em uma lista de reserva no sistema.
Após o alistamento, os jovens passam por uma seleção que inclui exames médicos e avaliações psicológicas para determinar sua aptidão para o serviço militar. Quando me alistei, fui submetido a essas etapas juntamente com vários outros jovens da minha cidade. A seleção é rigorosa e, ao final, apenas uma parte dos candidatos é escolhida para servir ao país durante um período de 12 meses. No meu caso, foram selecionados 50 novos candidatos.
Na época em que fui me alistar, eu estava profundamente envolvido com meus estudos. Eu estudava em três turnos diferentes: durante o dia (manhã e tarde), fazia um curso profissionalizante na área de elétrica, e à noite, frequentava o ensino médio. O serviço militar seria um grande obstáculo para mim, interrompendo minha rotina intensa de estudos e compromissos. Portanto, eu estava torcendo para ser dispensado e, felizmente, minha solicitação foi aceita.
Em minha cidade, o serviço militar obrigatório é realizado de forma voluntária, sem qualquer tipo de ajuda de custo ou bolsa para os soldados durante o período de serviço. Em contraste com outras localidades, onde os recrutas recebem um salário mínimo ou algo próximo disso, aqui a situação é bem mais precária. A manutenção do quartel e alimentação dos soldados são financiadas pela prefeitura local. No entanto, relatos de amigos que serviram indicam que frequentemente enfrentavam dificuldades, como a necessidade de levar comida de casa para não passar fome, devido à falta de repasse de verbas ou de alimentos pela prefeitura.
Embora o serviço militar não ofereça benefícios financeiros em minha cidade, acredito que ele é de extrema importância. Não só contribui para preparar os jovens para defender e apoiar o país, mas também desempenha um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento de cidadãos mais responsáveis e disciplinados. Em uma época em que muitos jovens parecem desinteressados e irresponsáveis, o serviço militar pode proporcionar experiências valiosas que moldam o caráter e a responsabilidade.
Tenho dois primos que serviram ao serviço militar por escolha própria e ambos ficaram bastante satisfeitos com a experiência, mesmo sem receber nenhuma remuneração. Eles frequentemente expressam saudade do período em que serviram e, se fosse possível, teriam seguido carreira militar. A experiência de serviço militar transformou-os, tornando-os pessoas mais responsáveis e com uma visão de mundo mais abrangente.
Se eu pudesse voltar no tempo, não mudaria nada em relação à minha decisão de não servir. Na época do meu alistamento, eu já era uma pessoa bastante responsável e disciplinada, e a ausência do serviço militar não me fez falta. Na verdade, não ter participado me permitiu seguir meu caminho e me tornar quem sou hoje. A experiência dos meus primos demonstrou que, apesar das dificuldades, o serviço militar pode proporcionar um crescimento significativo para muitos jovens. Assim, mesmo sem ter passado por isso, eu reconheço o valor e a importância desse processo para aqueles que têm a oportunidade de vivenciá-lo.
