This happened to me with a small square located at the back of the main catholic church of the city where I live since my childhood. Everyone calls it: The little donkey square, and there is a monument in which stands out for its fine details, a small donkey, next to a woman and a child looking at a tree trunk in the center of which appears the Virgin Mary with a child in her arms.
I always assumed, like the common villagers, that the square belonged to "The little donkey" and I was never interested in finding out what it really represented; and I am sure that many of the locals today do not know its history.

Esto me ocurrió con una pequeña plaza que se encuentra en la parte posterior de la iglesia católica principal de la ciudad donde resido desde mi infancia. Todo el mundo la llama: La Plaza de la Burrita, y es que en ella hay un monumento en el cual resalta por sus finos detalles, un pequeño asno, junto a una mujer y un niño observando un tronco de árbol en cuyo centro aparece la Virgen María con un niño en sus brazos.
Siempre asumí, como el común de los pobladores, que la plaza era de “La burrita” y jamás me interesé en averiguar lo que realmente representaba; y estoy seguro de que muchos de los lugareños hoy en día desconocen su historia.
Acompáñenme a conocer un poco sobre este significativo lugar.
I must begin by saying that this square is called "Our Lady of the Bark", and that this representation of the Virgin Mary is the Patroness of the City of Acarigua in the state of Portuguesa in Venezuela, a place where I have lived since I was nine years old, and to tell the truth, many years have passed since my arrival to this land of grace.
But why is homage paid to this representation of the Virgin Mary? And why did the Virgin of the Bark become the Patroness of this land?
Debo comenzar diciendo que esta plaza lleva por nombre “Nuestra Señora de la Corteza”, y que esta advocación de la Virgen María es la Patrona de la Ciudad de Acarigua en el estado Portuguesa de Venezuela, lugar en el cual resido desde que tenía nueve años, y a decir verdad, han pasado bastantes años desde mi llegada a esta tierra de gracia.
Pero ¿por qué se homenajea a esta advocación de la Virgen María? y ¿por qué la Virgen de Nuestra Señora de la Corteza se convirtió en la Patrona de esta tierra?
Briefly I will tell you that the story began in 1702, when Venezuela was still a Spanish colony. Already in the year 1652 the Virgin Mary had appeared to the Indian Coromoto in the city of Guanare (which is the capital of the state of Portuguesa), and her veneration had become popular because of the miracles and favors received from her.
A mulatto (a mixed race woman, a mixture of white Spanish and black slaves) called Margarita La Perla had asked the Virgin of Coromoto for the healing of her son, who was seriously ill, and she had granted her the miracle; so in gratitude she undertook the pilgrimage with her young son, from her hometown (San Carlos, Cojedes state) on the back of a donkey. But upon arriving in Guanare, the number of devotees and pilgrims was so great that she did not have the opportunity to approach the Virgin, having to return to her homeland full of frustration and sadness.
On her way back to her land, she stopped to rest next to a tree in Tacamahaco, tying the donkey to its trunk. She had fallen asleep when the donkey's noise woke her up and when she approached to see what was happening, she realized that on the bark of the tree a representation of the Virgin Mary had appeared with a child in her hands, and a strong glow flooded the whole environment. She understood that the Virgin had accepted her pilgrimage and was giving her a blessing. Before continuing on her way, she carefully cut off the bark of the tree containing the representation of the Virgin and took it back to her homeland.
However, when he reached the city of Acarigua (an obligatory step to reach his town), the donkey refused to continue on his way, lying down right in the place where today stands the monument to the apparition of the Virgin. The local parish priest upon learning of the situation asked Margarita to leave the bark in his church for veneration, which he did after insistence and negotiations, added to the donkey's refusal to continue on its way. From then on Acarigua began to admire and venerate the Virgin of the Bark, receiving ecclesiastical approval in 1757.
After many years of veneration, the original relic of the bark of the tree, which had been set in a silver frame with precious stones, was stolen from the church in 1966 and was never recovered, so in 1975 a replica was carved in a piece of wood from the same type of tree in which it appeared to the mulatto Margarita.

Una mulata (mujer mestiza mezcla de blancos españoles y negros esclavos) llamada Margarita La Perla había pedido a la Virgen de Coromoto por la sanación de su hijo, quien estaba gravemente enfermo, y esta le había concedido el milagro; por lo cual en agradecimiento emprendió la peregrinación con su pequeño hijo, desde su ciudad natal (San Carlos estado Cojedes) en el lomo de un burro. Pero al llegar a Guanare, la cantidad de devotos y peregrinos era tan grande que no tuvo la oportunidad de acercarse a la Virgen, teniendo que regresar a su tierra llena de frustración y tristeza.
Ya de retorno a su tierra, se detiene a descansar junto a un árbol de Tacamahaco, amarrando al burro en su tronco. Se había quedado dormida cuando la algarabía del asno la despertó y al acercarse a ver lo que ocurría se percató de que en la corteza del árbol había aparecido una representación de la Virgen María con un niño en sus manos, y un fuerte resplandor inundaba todo el entorno. Ella entendió que la Virgen había aceptado su peregrinación y le daba la bendición. Antes de continuar su camino, cortó cuidadosamente la corteza del árbol que contenía la representación de la Virgen y se la llevó hacia su tierra natal.
No obstante, cuando llegó a la ciudad de Acarigua (paso obligatorio para llegar a su localidad), el burro se negó a continuar su camino, acostándose justo en el lugar donde hoy se erige el monumento a la aparición de la Virgen. El párroco local al enterarse de la situación le pidió a Margarita que dejara la corteza en su iglesia para su veneración, lo cual logró luego de insistencia y negociaciones, sumado a la negativa del asno a continuar su camino. A partir de entonces Acarigua inicia su admiración y veneración a la Virgen de la Corteza, recibiendo la aprobación eclesiástica en el año 1757.
Tras muchos años de veneración, la reliquia original de la corteza del árbol, la cual se había engastado en un marco de plata con piedras preciosas, fue robada de la iglesia en el año 1966 y nunca fue recuperada, por lo que en el año 1975 se realizó una réplica tallada en un pedazo de madera de la misma especie de árbol en que se le apareció a la mulata Margarita.

La plaza que honra la advocación de la Virgen de la Corteza, fue construida entre los años 1951 y 1953, con un monumento hecho en bronce por una empresa italiana con sede en Caracas. Posteriormente sufrió una serie de malas remodelaciones que acabaron convirtiéndola en un lugar desabrido y desolado. En 1964 fueron retiradas las rejas de hierro macizo que la rodeaba y en 1969 fueron cortados la mayoría de los árboles que engalanaban todas sus áreas y daban frescura al lugar. Para el año 2016 se encontraba en un abandono total, donde locos, borrachos, drogadictos y prostitutas hacían de las suyas entre los pocos árboles y bancas que quedaban; a finales de ese año la municipalidad removió la estatua de Margarita La Perla, la cual habían intentado robarla, y en enero del 2017 se robaron la cuerda de cobre con que estaba amarrado el burrito.
Debido al deterioro e invasión por parte de delincuentes y maleantes, ese mismo 2017 la municipalidad terminó eliminando todos los árboles y plantas, así como las bancas, dejando solo un piso de granito blanco parecido a una pista de hielo (pero con nuestro calor característico) con el monumento incompleto en el centro, el cual, para no hacerlo apetecible a los robos por su bronce, fue cubierto con pintura negra. Para mí, la peor de todas las restauraciones. La apariencia que presenta en las imágenes muestra la última restauración realizada en 2023.
