The Botanical Garden of Madrid (Spain) in spring [Eng-Esp]

On this occasion, we will visit a place that is a must-see if you visit Madrid in April. We will enter the Royal Botanical Garden, a place where you can feel a very special energy, especially in autumn and spring.

Simply, if you feel like it and you'll allow me, I'll show you the Botanical Garden of Madrid.

On this occasion, I would like to especially invite @sacra97, @palomap3, and @nanixxx to accompany me on my walk through this little storehouse of good energy located in a very central area of the city.

It's true, we're not going to venture into a large natural area, but even so, I'm sure that the spectacle of spring colors and aromas will not leave anyone who is lucky enough to experience them indifferent.

En esta ocasión visitaremos lo que es una parada obligatoria si visitas Madrid en el mes de abril. Entraremos en el Real Jardín Botánico, un lugar en el cual se percibe una energía muy especial, sobre todo en otoño y primavera.

Simplemente, y si te apetece y me lo permites, te mostraré el Jardín Botánico de Madrid.

En esta ocasión quiero invitar especialmente a @sacra97, a @palomap3 y a @nanixxx a acompañar mis pasos por este pequeño almacen de buenas energías situado en una zona muy céntrica de la ciudad.

Es cierto, no vamos a adentrarnos en un gran paraje natural, aún así, tengo toda la seguridad de que el espectáculo de colores y aromas primaverales no dejan indiferente a quien tiene la fortuna de vivirlos.

The Botanical Garden is very close to the Estación del Arte metro station in Madrid and connected to the rest of the city by several bus and train lines. So getting to this place full of plants, many of which are exotic to the inhabitants of the capital, is not at all complicated.

Although I arrived a few days too late to see the tulips in full bloom, their flowers were already somewhat open, and with the sacred plants a few days ahead of flowering, I am sure that this walk we are about to begin is an excellent way to recharge your batteries (for those who accompany me on the visit, of course! 😁).

El Jardín Botanico se encuentra muy cercana a la Estación del Arte del metro de Madrid y conectado al resto de la ciudad por varias líneas de autobuses y trenes. Por lo que llegar a este lugar lleno de plantas, muchas exóticas para los habitantes de la capital, no es una tarea nada complicada.

Aunque llegué unos días tarde para ver a los tulipanes en su pleno apogeo, sus flores ya se encontraban algo abiertas, y con unos días de adelanto a la floración de las palntas sacras, estoy seguro de que este paseo que ahora iniciamos es una excelente forma de cargarse de buenas energías (a quienes me acompañen en la visita, ¡claro! 😁).

When you arrive, queuing is inevitable, but don't be discouraged. Unlike the Prado Museum, this line of people moves quickly. In a few minutes, you'll be at the ticket office paying for your admission to the site.

If you arrived in Madrid by plane or other means of transport and are staying in one of the city's expensive accommodations, visiting the restaurants and bars in the center of Madrid, the €4 admission fee is nothing, almost the same as a coffee in the Plaza Mayor.

There is no time limit for visits, so you can stay in the garden from when it opens in the morning until it closes at night.

Al llegar, hacer cola es inevitable aunque no hay que desanimarse, a diferencia del Museo del Prado esta fila de personas espectantes se mueve con rapidez. En unos pocos minutos nos encontraremos delante de la taquilla y abonando el billete de acceso al recinto.

Si llegaste a Madrid en avión, o por otro medio de transporte, te has alojado alguna en alguno de los caros alojamientos de la ciudad, estás visitando los restaurantes y bares del centro de Madrid, los 4€ que cuesta la entrada no son nada, casi lo que cuesta un café en la Plaza Mayor.

No hay límite horario para las visitas, por lo que se puede permencer en el jardín desde su apertura por la mañana hasta su cierre por la noche.

Once inside, we find ourselves in a place with paths that run in straight lines and intersect at right angles. The garden not only looks very orderly, it is. Flowers on one side, crops on the other, ferns a little further on...

A few meters ahead, on the right-hand side, are the stars of spring: tulips. They are the reason thousands of people visit at this time of year. Yellow, white, pink, and Easter-colored tulips form veritable carpets of vegetation that stand out against the yellowish dirt paths and the fresh green of the stems and bushes.

Thousands of locals and visitors come to these gardens just to see the tulips in bloom and take a nice selfie surrounded by color.

Una vez adentro, nos econtraremos en un lugar con senderos que trazan líneas rectas y se cruzan de forma perpendicular. El jardín no sólo parece un sitio muy ordenado, además, lo está. Flores por un lado, cultivos por otro, los helechos un poco más allá....

Avanzando unos metros de frente, a mano derecha se encuentran los protagonistas de la primavera, los tulipanes. El motivo de visita de miles de personas durante estas fechas. De color amarillo, blanco, rosa o de Semana Santa forman verdaderas alfombras vegetales que resaltan entre los amarillentos senderos de tierra y el verde fresco de tallos y matorrales.

Miles de autóctonos y forasteros visitamos estos jardines sólo por ver los tulipanes en flor y hacernos un bonito selfie rodeado de colores.

Of course, it's not just tulips and low vegetation; there are also trees, which I'll talk about later. Many of them are also laden with white or pink flowers. In short, in spring, the Botanical Garden offers a whole palette of colors for us to enjoy.

It's hot, so I carry a bottle of mineral water in my backpack, which I sip from every now and then to hydrate my mouth and refresh my throat.

Although the temperature is intense, there are plenty of shadows and places to sit when we leave the tulip area.

Claro, no sólo se ven tulipanes, y no sólo hay vegetación baja, también están los árboles a los que dedicaré después alguna palabra. Muchos de ellos tambien cargados de flores blancas o rosas. En definitiva, en primavera el Botánico ofrece toda una paleta de colores para el goce de nuestra vista.

Hace calor, por lo que en mi mochila llevo mi botella de agua mineral, una botella de la que de vez en cuando robo un sorbo que hidrata mi boca y refresca mi garganta.

Aunque la temperatura aprieta las sombras y lugares para tomar asiento abundan cuando salimos del área de los tulipanes.

As I have already explained, it is not all tulips, and as we move away from them, the buds and flowers change in size, shape, and color. Every now and then, a blackbird lands on the ground and looks at us as if wondering what we are doing there.

Como ya he explicado, no todo son tulipanes, y en la medida en la que nos vamos alejando de ellos, los brotes y las flores van cambiando de tamaño, formas y colores. De vez en cuando un mirlo se posa en el suelo y nos mira como preguntándose por lo que estamos haciendo por allí.

Although many of the flowers try to attract our attention with their bright colors, I have to say that I am in love with trees. In the Botanical Garden, some of these beings are more than a hundred years old, offering not only shade but also impressive shapes and textures.

It is a real shame that my camera cannot capture the energy transmitted by these great wooden beings.

Among these trees that stand out for their uniqueness is an elm. An old, flattened tree that many visitors use as a photo backdrop.

We head towards it, but not before looking up at the sky. Before us, a landscape of light and dark is revealed, painted by the sun's rays high above on a canvas of dark branches.

The day is very pleasant, and we continue on our way.

Aunque muchas de las flores tratan de captar a gritos de colores nuestra atención, tengo que decir que soy un enamorado de los árboles. En el Jardín Botánico algunos de estos seres son más que centenarios ofreciendo, además de sombras, formas y texturas que impersionan.

Es una verdadera lástima que con mi cámara no se pueda captar la energía que transmiten estos grandes seres de madera.

Y entre estos árboles que destacan por su singularidad se encuentra un olmo. Un viejo árból de forma achatada al que muchos visitantes utilizan como compañero de fotografía.

Nos dirigimos a su encuentro, no sin antes levantar la vista al cielo. Ante nosotros se descubre un paisaje de claro oscuros pintado por los rayos del sol, allá en lo alto, sobre un lienzo de oscuras ramas.

El día es muy agradable y continuámos con nuetra marcha.

Right now, we are walking towards the Villanueva Pavilion, a building that, in addition to hosting exhibitions, is occupied by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The presence of the CSIC is explained by the fact that the Royal Botanical Garden is not only a garden, but also a research center.

Puede que en este momento te encuentres algo perdida/o, pero aquí te dejo la solución a este pequeño problema. Un mapa del Jardín y el camino que recorreremos hoy, bien señalizado. Como verás es imposible perderse.

En este momento caminamos hacia el Pabellón Villanueva, el edifico que además de dedicarse a exposiciones lo ocupa el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). La presencia del CESIC se explica debido a que el Real Jardín Botanico no sólo es un jardín, también es un centro de investigación.

We finally arrived at the elm tree. It was clear that, in addition to having no bad angles, it was a great model with extensive experience posing for strange visitors. A woman in a loud voice, as if she wanted me to know that she was an expert at counting years, said loudly, “It's 90 years old!”

I don't know how accurate that prediction is, but I imagine it as a great thousand-year-old tree that one day arrived from a distant planet in search of peace and to heal the scars left by its sidereal adventures.

Por fin llegamos al olmo. Se nota que, además de no tener ningún perfil malo, es una gran modelo con gran experiencia posando para extraños visitantes. Una mujer en voz alta, como si quisiera que supiera que era una gran experta en contar años, dijo en voz alta: ¡Tiene 90 años!

Desconozco lo acertado de tal predicción, yo me lo imagino como un gran árbol milenario que un día llegó de un planeta lejano buscando tranquilidad y curar las cicatrices que dejaron sus siderales aventuras.

Before reaching the Villanueva Pavilion, we pass by the statue of Carlos III and continue straight ahead.

Antes de llegar al Pabellón Villanueva pasamos por un costado de la estatua de Carlos III y seguimos de frente.

We peek inside the Villanueva Pavilion. On the ground floor, works by various contemporary artists are on display. We won't visit this exhibition today; we'll save it for another day. So we continue walking, looking for shade, drinking water, and sitting down when the landscape invites us to observe carefully and breathe.

Asomamos nuestra cabeza detro del Pabellón Villanueva. En su planta baja se exponen las obras de varios artistas contemporáneos. Hoy no visitaremos esta exposición, se queda para otro día, por lo que continuamos paseando, buscando sombras, bebiendo agua y sentándonos cuando el paisaje nos invita a observar con atención y respirar.

Next to the Villanueva Pavilion is a large Zen garden with large stones resting on black furrows of earth.

A un costado del Pabellón Villanueva se encuentra un gran jardín Zen con grandes piedras posadas sobre negros surcos de tierra.

Our journey takes us down other paths. The landscape changes, but the explosion of colors remains. You can also see trees from different families, some with truly spectacular trunks due to their size, texture, and different shapes.

Nuestro andar nos va dirigiendo por otros derroteros. El paisaje va cambiando, pero la explosión de diferentes coloridos sigue presente. Como también se pueden observar árboles de diferentes familias, agunos con unos troncos realmente espectaculares por su tamaño, textura y diferentes formas.

Although shapes and pigments change, there is a common denominator: we are surrounded at all times by a green blanket dotted with colorful shapes.

Aunque las formas y los pigmentos van cambiando, hay un denominador común: nos rodea en todo momento un manto verde salpicado de formas de colores.

Without a doubt, when you see the buildings peeking out from the sides of the garden, the feeling of being in an oasis of calm surrounded by the chaos of the city increases.

Sin duda, cuando se ven asomar los edificios por los laterales del jardín, la sensación de estar en un oasis de gran calma rodaeada del caos de la ciudad aumenta.

We are finally coming to the end of our tour. Our last stop will be the sacred plants section of the Santiago Castroviejo Greenhouse. On this level of the greenhouse, there are some large cacti. It's a shame we arrived a few days (or hours) before they were at their best. I found some flowers already open, but it was clear that the great spring spectacle was yet to come.

One of the “secrets” of the greenhouse is that the plants can also be seen from an upper floor. A secret created by the visitors themselves, who in their rush to see everything without “wasting time” don't see the stairs leading to this upper floor.

Por fin vamos llegando a la conclusion de este paseo. Nuestra última escala será la sección de plantas sacras del Invernadero Santiago Castroviejo. En este nivel del invernadero se hayan algunos ejemplares de cactus de gran tamaño. La pena es haber llegado unos días (o día o horas) antes de verlos en su máximo esplendor. Encontré alguna flor ya abierta, pero... era evidente que el gran espectáculo primaveral estaba por llegar.

Uno de los "secretos" del invernadero es que las plantas se pueden ver también desde una planta superior. Un secreto creado por los propios visitantes que en sus prisas por ver todo sin "perder el tiempo no ven las escaleras que conducen a esta planta superior.
