When it comes to community involvement, participating in local governance is more than just a civic duty, it is one of the best ways to promote democracy and progress. As a proud citizen of Nigeria, an active member of my local community, I have had the privilege of actively involving myself in local governance initiatives, including serving as part of the election team last year. Through these little and one time experiences I had to join the team in officiating the election, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of community engagement in shaping the future of our community, thereby causing a positive change.
Empowering Communities Through Participation
For me, personal involvement in local governance is not merely a passive obligation but it is a proactive commitment I have to do for the betterment of my community. Each time I see the opportunity to participate I don't hesitate, whether through volunteering for election duties like I did last year, attending town hall meetings which we do have every last Saturday of the month alongside with community sanitation. I have always strived to contribute meaningfully to the decision making processes each time I attend meetings, ideas that will impact the lives of my fellow residents. It is through our actively participating in local governance, we empower our communities, we try to speak for the concerns, advocate for their needs, and collectively shape our destinies.
Building Bridges Between Government and Citizens
As a member of the election team last year in my community I had the opportunity to facilitate a fair and transparent electoral process, I made sure that every voice was heard and every vote counted, yes oo one of the main reasons why I went there was to make sure nothing like cheat and favoritism, that simple act I did last year Served as a bridge between government authorities and citizens, as everyone was happy especially the elderly people who normally do not use to participate because of fight and injustice were able to vote and their vote were counted accurately. I witnessed the importance of building trust, transparency, and accountability in governance. When we citizens uphold the principles of democracy and integrity, we strengthen the bonds between us as citizens and then we pave the way for inclusive and responsive governance.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
While community engagement in local governance is vital, it is not without its challenges. One of the issues I will say we had was the people in power were trying to fraud the election thereby breaking the laws governing the electoral process. When I noticed that I quickly called the attention of the voters and read the rules to their hearing loud and clear, this has always been the issue, people who have money will come to the election field and buy the heart of people making them to vote for people who are not their choice but because of money they have to do it.This is one of the major challenge, and how people tries to violate the laws
