I spend pretty much 100% of my photography time shooting images in one photographic exposure where all the elements are recorded to the digital sensor in one hit. When I post it online, the image I create has only been sharpened or cropped and very little else has been processed.
Now completely ignore that mantra! I messed around in Photoshop and stumbled upon the Oil Paint filter which creates an effect I really like.
I started messing with this filter a while back where I noticed I was attending quite a few conference calls at work. I found I wasn't involved that much in the meetings which gave me time for a little discrete Photoshop. Some people sit there and doodle, I sit there and Photoshop!
For these shots, I usually turn up all the Oil Paint sliders to the max. I then sometimes apply the same strength twice or more times. The more abstract the better.
Chayla covered in paint
This was from a photoshop with Chayla East aka The Tattooed Princess. She turned up covered in red and purple paint with her nipples covered to protect her modesty. Not all model images work with this filter but I liked the punch of colour and textures in this shot.
Trying to avoid setting a lightpainter on fire
This is @neilru75 holding an umbrella aloft whilst trying to avoid flinching with the hot sparks raining down. Good job Neil! The sparks also look great oil painted!
Canary Wharf by night
I bagged this shot from a high vantage point in Canary Wharf at night using a long exposure. I wasn't that enamoured of the image I got but the oil paint filter came to the rescue.
Modern Day Cave Painter
This is an oil painted version of a favourite lightpainting image where I've rotated the camera and swapped lenses mid exposure. Applying the oil paint filter to the already great textures on the cave walls just worked for me.
Rotating the Oil Painted Snake
This was a camera rotated lightpainting image shot in the Peak District where we changed colour gels on opposite quadrants. The textures in the forest when the filter is applied just come alive!
Feel the hot oil
This is a backlit image where I've spun a firework on a drill. Probably quite a dangerous thing to do but luckily the subject in the frame is a highly experienced paramedic!
Neena Nude
This is Neena in the nude with quite a lot of smoke in the original image. I remember applying the oil paint filter to the maximum strength 5 times for a more whacky effect!
About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
