After listening to the Peak Podcast #3 with guest speaker @aggroed, co-founder of the popular @splinterlands game, which basically single-handedly saved the Steem blockchain, I am seeing the vision of where this is all going very clearly before me. Let's dive in.
Massive Multiplayer Online Game
Splinterlands was created with tons of inspiration of World of Warcraft, the most successful game of all time and the best MMORPG out there. It just got revived through WoW Classic, triggering nostalgia and the thirst for challenge while playing. Even though Splinterlands is a Trading Card Game like Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone, it is already going in a different direction than its predecessors.
Right now, the game is featuring the spirit of games like WoW, with an amazing fantasy world and more story behind it, than 99% of all players have ever read. This is building a narrative, out of which something very different can emerge: A living and breathing world!
MMOGs are giving the players so much action to do every single day, that they can fully dive into this alternative reality. Splinterlands is not there yet but it is taking the right steps into that direction. Imagine you can equip your monsters and summoners with cool gadgets and items, enhancing their power and abilities. This will change the game forever and make it something completly different than it is today.
Crafting and Mining
The most surprising news for me is the upcoming crafting and mining system. Crafting is straight out of the role-play game world and allows players to hunt for reagents and craft them into amazing items, which will enrich the game-play to new levels. In a digital ownership blockchain game, this translates directly into a rich economy, where players will start to earn money doing exactly that and selling their craft on the decentralized market. In traditional games this is huge for a long time but in the crypto world this is something on a different level, as money is involved.
Another aspect is the mining, which is something directly out of the crypto world but now translated into gaming. You will be able to own mines, to get your hands on the scare resources, required to craft the new items in the first place. While this will likely not the only way to get those reagents, it will be an amazing passive way and only available to those who spend the time or money to build such mines in the first place. The fruits of that will be a mini-economy all around this one reagent your mine is producing and people will start to corner the market with their production.
1000 Games In One
While we are all used to have a very straight forward game, this will open up to a sea of new large and small games - all under the mantle of the Splinterlands lore. Fighting asynchronous games, guilds vs guilds, crafting, equipping, buffing, Boss Monsters - these things are all on the horizon and yet just the beginning. I see the future of Splinterlands in an even more diverse ability for players to enjoy their digital ownership of cards and items in more and more forms of game-play.
Today it is still a Card Game. Tomorrow this is likely to be just a small aspect of the vast possibilities. It is not difficult to create completely different games, based on the existing card IDs. I have been talking about this way back already. Both the Splinterlands company as well as other game studios can take the code and reinterpret the data on the blockchain. All of a sudden, our monsters become units in a strategy game, a shooter or a puzzle. The owners of cards will then have a starting advantage for those new games, where entire new ecosystems can spring off from.
There is so much money and hype in the game already, this is only a matter of time. The first offspring-game will most likely create an avalanche of new ideas. Each new game will bring more value to the table and make owning cards and items even more popular than before.
