Peer Pressure: Positive, Negative, or Necessary.
Peer pressure, whenever we have conversations about this subject, it's always the negative part we're quick to talk about, but have you actually thought about the positive impacts of peer pressure? No right, that's what we will be looking at today.
Peer pressure has to do with the impact or influence people of the same age can have on an individual's life, choices, decisions, attitude, etc. Peer pressure could either result in negative or positive outcomes.
Having an understanding of how to manage peer pressure is often needed for every individual to make decisions because there will always be peer pressure at most ages in life, although it is easier to succumb to its influence at certain age range.
Positive peer pressure can help individuals engage in healthy competition to strive to do better in some areas of life.
Some Areas in Which Positive Peer Pressure Can be Beneficial:
Personal Growth
Peers can inspire and challenge one another to grow, to leave their comfort zone, and to look farther than where they are while also chasing opportunities and their dreams. It can be a friend among your peers supporting you to take up a certain leadership role, or learning a skill that is required to boost your career. These are some ways peer pressure can enhance personal growth.
Better and Wise Decision Making
If you're part of a good peer group, they tend to influence your decision making, to help you make better and wise decision that can help you make better plans for your life. At a certain time in my life, there was this friend I had who had just gotten a well paying job and the next thing he was going to do was planning on getting a car, I had to sit him down and explain to him why a car wasn't a necessity at that point of his life, don't get me wrong, having a car isn't a bad thing, it's a very good thing, but everything in life has it's time, so getting a car at that time would do him more harm than good. By the time we finished having that conversation, he saw reasons with me, and understood that I wasn't out to get him, but just trying to look out for him, and he took my advice.
Academic Excellence
I could remember when I was in high school, I had a circle of friends, and we were among the ones who came top in class, I could remember whenever we were given our mid-term results(this was the only time our results were handed to us), you would see us comparing our grades, and promising to do better next time. This is an one way in which peer pressure can foster positive competition to do better academically.
These are some positive outcomes of peer pressure, so when next you hear someone talking about peer pressure negatively, try to let them know that there are also positive aspects of peer pressure.
