This week, the subject of the Qurator Photo Contest is slow.
And although I like speed more, I do have a couple of pictures of some very slow things in my photo archive.
Snails and slugs
Snails and slugs aren't my favorite animals. But because of their slowness they are one of the few animals that are really easy to photograph. They move very slowly and their tentacle eyes are very curious.
Despite the fact that snails and slugs are easy models, I still don't like them in my backyard. Apart from photography I also have gardening as a hobby. Every year I'm trying to grow some vegetables in my backyard, but last year was a disaster. We really had hundreds of slugs that ate all my crops. They even crawled into my tomato plant to eat the juicy cherry tomatoes.
I don't like to use poison or cups of beer to drown them in, so I really didn't had anything to harvest last year.
I hope it will be better this year.
Tortoises
Some other animals that are easy to photograph are tortoises. These fascinating animals can get older than humans.
I haven't seen many of them in the wild, but I did see quite a few in captivity. The photo below is from Lonesome George. I took the photograph when we visited the Galapagos archipelo many years ago.
Lonesome George was a famous Pinta Island tortoise. He was the last known of his species. The tortoise population was nearly wiped out by whalers and sailors in the 19th and 20th centuries, who took them for food. Despite efforts to find a mate and save his species, he never produced offspring. He died in 2012.
