Are you aware of the existence of the word "PLAGIARISM?"
What is it? Plagiarism is ...
"An act of taking other people's works or ideas without the author's proper consent and implying it as one's own in the absence of acknowledgement." - Oxford Dictionary
In simplest words, it is an act of stealing other people's intellectual property. It is often done when an individual scrolls in the internet (e.g. Google) to look for such published information to provide answers on an assignment, activity, and even research studies. With the help of Ctrl C + V (Copy and Paste), it became more easier to do.
How to avoid plagiarism? Actually, it's just so simple that even an elementary student can comply with. Here are two (2) easy steps to prevent commiting to the crime of plagiarism:
- Paraphrase any contents found in the internet. Remember, do not just change 1-2 words, but the whole content.
- Acknowledge the author by incorporating a proper citations.
These steps are so easy to do. So I am confused on why there are still uncountable people who are fond of engaging themselves to this unacceptable deed? Well, copy and pasting only consumes seconds unlike reconstructing other works into something new requires lots of braincells and minutes. Yeah, you got the answer. "Laziness and unwillingness to create an owned intellectual property."
HOW DO I COME UP WITH THIS KIND OF TOPIC FOR MY BLOGGING CONTENT?
Here's the reason behind ...
"By Friday (11.11.22), I along with my buddies in thesis came along to CLSU-University Research Center to have a whole day consultation meeting with our thesis advisor. However, a day before that, I already discovered what they [thesis buddies] were doing. What is it? They are using my cited literatures for their own thesis paper. I mean, there's nothing wrong with that. What isn't right is that they do exactly copy and pasting what's written in my paper, yes! They do not redirect to my cited articles but to what I had reconstructed.
*While we're waiting for our advisor to arrive, I suddenly feel not in the good mood. Why? I got proofs to my own hypothesis. 2 out of my 5 buddies (including my ex-crushie) in thesis copied most of my cited literatures. I stressed myself out for days & nights just to paraphrase and polish it. Then, they'll just do the magic of Ctrl C + V? Just, what? And now, I have the most details to revise among us. Plus, they do not credited me by saying: "We got those information from [my name]"
Slowly, I am losing a portion of my trust to them. It's a big deal to me because I exerted a lot of effort for my paper. Additionally, I am so strict upon doing a paperwork. I don't want other people copying my works, without or with consent. We're old enough to do our own papers. More so, we are all aware that plagiarism is forbidden. In fact, it's a serious offense written in our University Handbook and can result to the student to be "expelled" once it's proven. Also, why copy other's works? Don't they know how to reconstruct a sentence or paragraph? Or maybe, they simply don't understand what they are reading."
Just like what Albert Einstein said ...
"If you cannot explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."
I want to directly confront them about this but I don't know how to execute it without them silently thinking of being 'selfish'.
Thus, I will just distance myself to them. And upon submitting my revised versions of paper, I will send it 1-minute before my turn and after I edit it? Will immediately take it down by deleting the copy in the Google Drive of Mapping Team. This way, I could possibly prevent my work to be copied.
