Hello to all the green thumbs (and the not-so-green ones too)! When we moved in with @altheana, quickly, we needed to buy some indoor plants.
It's quite a budget, especially when you don't know much about it. For 3 plants, the bill went up to almost 100 euros! And when you're a bit short on budget, we have no other choice than to be a bit creative if we want to have new plants in the house.
My mom told me that I could make cuttings of my plants. But no luck, the 3 plants we bought are Calatheas. In other words, they are plants that don't propagate by cuttings. You won't find any nodes on the stems to succeed in a Calathea cutting.
Ours became huge in just a few weeks, so I decided to change its pot to give it more space to grow a bit more.
While doing the operation, I wanted at the same time to untangle the roots to get a shoot (with its roots) and plant it in another pot. It's the only way to multiply this plant.
The problem I encountered was that the root system was way too dense to untangle without breaking everything. My goal was to retrieve the shoot you see in the foreground of the previous picture; the stem with the 3 leaves.
But I didn't manage to get that part, it was strongly attached to the rest of the plant. So I decided to take a very small shoot that was barely coming out of the soil.
The little shoot in question, you can see it in the foreground of this picture taken a few days earlier. Right in front of the stem with the 3 leaves.
I had a hell of a time getting it without damaging the rest too much. And while I thought I had retrieved the roots with the shoot, I only got the shoot.
We'll see if this shoot develops. According to my research, you have to wait 4 to 8 weeks for a shoot to grow its new root system.
I placed it in a small pot I had aside after planting my rhubarb.
It's clear that for a first attempt at plant propagation, I didn't start with the easiest one. To make things worse, our cat is really intrigued by this new plant and has roughed it up a bit.
I think I’ll find other plants easier to propagate, maybe I’m finding myself a new hobby!

Ma maman me disait que je pouvais réaliser des boutures de mes plantes. Mais pas de chance, les 3 plantes que nous avons achetées sont des Calathea. En d'autres termes, ce sont des plantes qui ne se bouturent pas. Vous ne trouverez pas de nœud sur les tiges pour réussir une bouture de Calathea.
La nôtre est devenue énorme en l'espace de quelques semaines, alors j'ai décidé de changer son pot afin de lui laisser plus de place pour grandir encore un peu.
En faisant la manipulation, je voulais en même temps démêler les racines pour récupérer un rejet (avec ses racines) et le planter dans un autre pot. C'est la seule façon de multiplier cette plante.
Le problème que j'ai rencontré était que le système racinaire était beaucoup trop dense pour démêler sans tout casser. J'avais comme objectif de récupérer le rejet que vous voyez au premier plan de la précédente photo ; la tige avec les 3 feuilles.
Mais je n'ai pas réussi à récupérer cette partie, elle était solidement accrochée au reste de la plante. J'ai donc décidé de récupérer un tout petit rejet qui sortait à peine de terre.
Le petit rejet en question, vous pouvez le voir au premier plan de cette photo prise quelques jours plus tôt. Juste devant la tige avec les 3 feuilles.
J'ai eu un mal fou à le récupérer sans trop abîmer le reste. Et alors que je pensais récupérer les racines avec le rejet, je n'ai récupéré que le rejet.
On verra bien si ce rejet se développe. D'après mes recherches, il faut attendre 4 à 8 semaines pour qu'un rejet développe son nouveau système racinaire.
Je l'ai placé dans un petit pot que j'avais de côté après avoir planté ma rhubarbe.
Il est clair que pour une première tentative de multiplication de plante, je n'ai pas commencé par le plus simple. Pour ne rien arranger, notre chat est vraiment intrigué par cette nouvelle plante et l'a un peu brutalisée.
Je pense trouver d'autres plantes plus simples à bouturer, je suis peut-être en train de me trouver un nouveau passe-temps !
