I love sports, but for some reason, all the sports teams fail in when they are almost reaching a cup. The last was in the NHL Stanley Cup finals. Canadian teams haven't won a cup since 1993. This year a team from my province Edmonton Oilers went to the finals, I don't support them usually but I joined all the hype. Well they lost the finals and Canada doesn't have a champion in their favorite sport for one more year. Am I the person who brings bad luck? So what if I am the person who brings bad luck to the world and that's why we have hunger, wars, and diseases?
Of course, I don't believe in that. I used to be more superstitious before in sports, but now I am pretty conscious that it doesn't affect anything what type of shoes I wear during a game, which I am not playing. And it is the same with the world problems. Hunger and war are mainly side effects of our brain development. Other animals dispute territories and fight for them. Our conscience and our rationality made us also develop greed, selfishness, and other bad characteristics. Regular people form governments, these people together with people that only care about their own fortune, and don't care about others. Also, people identify themselves in groups and sometimes they don't want to coexist with other groups, which brings wars. When we talk about war we only can see a fight between countries or big group representations, but we can see war happening between neighbors sometimes on an individual level.
Diseases on the other hand are caused by microorganisms or by our own genetics. So it is part of nature and the world's biology. So we can stop some diseases with medicine progression, and maybe delay some others, but it is quite impossible to eradicate all diseases, even focusing on those that only affect human beings. Diseases are part of the biological control of our species. I am not saying that I am against medicine development, since I am part of the research body that tries to counterattack that, but it will be hard to find a scientist who truly believes that all human diseases can disappear even in a further future.
So, going to the extreme now, if I was the cause of all bad things happening in the world would I sacrifice myself? As based on previous paragraphs, it is difficult for me to think about this hypothesis since it is hard for me to imagine that. In addition, I don't dare to take my life away by myself. I remember watching a couple of movies in which some characters decide to sacrifice their lives for a big purpose. I can't think on myself doing that, maybe if I am in a real event where It could really affect something my life. But it is hard to imagine something so far in my imagination.
My life is precious, like any other life on this planet. My skepticism makes me force my mind too much when thinking about the hypothesis that my death can bring the end of everything that is bad in the world. I prefer for now to think of everything that I can do to fight at least against hunger, war and diseases. I have worked daily for years researching diseases to find ways to understand them better to create some resistance against them. In addition, I fight daily against all social problems and different types of fights. Africa and the Middle East are too far for me, but fights are happening in our neighborhood or local community all the time, so why not invest time in that?
Eu adoro esportes, mas, por algum motivo, todos os times esportivos falham quando estão quase alcançando um título. O último foi nas finais da Stanley Cup da NHL. Times canadenses não ganham um título desde 1993. Este ano, um time da minha província, Edmonton Oilers, chegou às finais. Eu normalmente não os apoio, mas entrei na empolgação. Bem, eles perderam as finais e o Canadá não tem um campeão em seu esporte favorito por mais um ano. Será que eu sou a pessoa que traz azar? E se eu for a pessoa que traz azar para o mundo e é por isso que temos fome, guerras e doenças?
Claro, eu não acredito nisso. Eu costumava ser mais supersticioso com esportes, mas agora estou bastante consciente de que não afeta nada o tipo de sapato que uso durante um jogo, no qual eu nem estou jogando. E é o mesmo com os problemas mundiais. A fome e a guerra são principalmente efeitos colaterais do desenvolvimento do nosso cérebro. Outros animais disputam territórios e lutam por eles. Nossa consciência e nossa racionalidade também nos fizeram desenvolver ganância, egoísmo e outras características ruins. Pessoas comuns formam governos, essas pessoas junto com aquelas que se preocupam apenas com sua própria fortuna e não se importam com os outros. Além disso, as pessoas se identificam em grupos e, às vezes, não querem coexistir com outros grupos, o que traz guerras. Quando falamos de guerra, só conseguimos ver uma luta entre países ou grandes representações de grupos, mas podemos ver guerra acontecendo entre vizinhos às vezes, em um nível individual.
Por outro lado, as doenças são causadas por microrganismos ou pela nossa própria genética. Então, isso faz parte da natureza e da biologia do mundo. Podemos parar algumas doenças com o avanço da medicina e talvez atrasar outras, mas é quase impossível erradicar todas as doenças, mesmo focando naquelas que afetam apenas os seres humanos. As doenças fazem parte do controle biológico da nossa espécie. Não estou dizendo que sou contra o desenvolvimento da medicina, pois faço parte do corpo de pesquisa que tenta combater isso, mas será difícil encontrar um cientista que realmente acredite que todas as doenças humanas possam desaparecer, mesmo em um futuro distante.
Então, indo para o extremo agora, se eu fosse a causa de todas as coisas ruins que acontecem no mundo, eu me sacrificaria? Com base nos parágrafos anteriores, é difícil para mim pensar nessa hipótese, pois é difícil imaginar isso. Além disso, não ouso tirar minha vida. Lembro-me de assistir a alguns filmes em que alguns personagens decidem sacrificar suas vidas por um grande propósito. Não consigo me imaginar fazendo isso, talvez se eu estivesse em um evento real onde isso realmente pudesse afetar algo em minha vida. Mas é difícil imaginar algo tão distante na minha imaginação.
Minha vida é preciosa, como qualquer outra vida neste planeta. Meu ceticismo me faz forçar muito minha mente ao pensar na hipótese de que minha morte poderia trazer o fim de tudo que é ruim no mundo. Prefiro, por enquanto, pensar em tudo o que posso fazer para lutar, pelo menos, contra a fome, a guerra e as doenças. Trabalho diariamente há anos pesquisando doenças para encontrar maneiras de entendê-las melhor e criar alguma resistência contra elas. Além disso, luto diariamente contra todos os problemas sociais e diferentes tipos de conflitos. África e Oriente Médio estão muito longe para mim, mas os conflitos estão acontecendo em nosso bairro ou comunidade local o tempo todo, então por que não investir tempo nisso?
