Parents are always an example for their children. We as children accept everything as the truth and that our parents are beings above everything. When we grow up we start to view differently and maybe some characteristics we don't want to pass forward. Lately, I have been thinking more about the things that I don't want to be for my children than my parents were. However, it is a good exercise to see also the good things that probably are good to pass forward to my children.
One thing that I can't complain about is that my parents helped me satisfy my curiosity about nature. Since I was a child they provided me with material to watch and read about science. My father is an engineer and works in a regular company that sells metal cylinders, but he still has experience in academia. He had a master's in nuclear physics, and he explained to me a bit about his project but I never understood much. Maybe when I asked I was too little to understand. My father is a bit closed as well about his history so it is something that I need to dig in to understand more. Maybe because of him, my pursuit of natural sciences became more specialized. My love about science I try to pass forward to my kids, of course, that I won't force them to keep the same track that I had. I want them to make their path in life, if they are happy being an artist, musician, medical doctor, lawyer, teacher, or whatever, I will be happy as well. But I guess that it is a type of connection when we show our kids things that we like, including musical taste, food, hobbies, and in my case also science. Every sparkle of curiosity I try to feed more so it can have some room to expand. So this is a good thing that probably it is from my father's help that I started to see what I wanted to be.
My mom on the other hand, was a person who helped me sometimes to calm me down when I was sad about the world, especially when she had some chance to do it, when she wasn't busy with herself or other things. Despite that, I feel that I needed more of her help regarding that, I learned some techniques that at least bring me some memories and help me to calm down my little ones. I still sing the same song For bedtime that she used to sing to me. That type of action re-creates for me a moment with my mom with my kids, and maybe it will create one memory with them as well.
One thing that my parents taught me also was how to be proud of my culture and origins. That is also something that I am making sure to transmit to my kids. My family history is a bit suffered in Europe before coming to Brazil. All this past family story was passed to me and for sure I am passing ahead to my kids, so they know where they come from and what is their background identity.
It is difficult to dig a bit into how my parents contributed in a good way to my life when I am currently revising what I am and how my parents created some problems within me. However, with a bit of effort, I can find things that I currently understand are good that they passed me and I am moving all of this also toward my kids. It is tough to be a father or mother and tricky to filter out all the traumas and characteristics that we should improve from our parents. But still, not everything was bad.
Os pais são sempre um exemplo para os seus filhos. Nós, como filhos, aceitamos tudo como verdade e que os nossos pais estão acima de tudo. Quando crescemos, começamos a ver as coisas de maneira diferente e talvez algumas características que não queremos passar adiante. Ultimamente, tenho pensado mais nas coisas que não quero ser para os meus filhos do que meus pais foram. No entanto, é um bom exercício também ver as coisas boas que provavelmente são boas para passar aos meus filhos.
Uma coisa com a qual não posso reclamar é que meus pais me ajudaram a satisfazer minha curiosidade sobre a natureza. Desde criança, eles me forneceram material para assistir e ler sobre ciência. Meu pai é engenheiro e trabalha em uma empresa regular que vende cilindros de metal, mas ainda tem experiência na academia. Ele fez mestrado em física nuclear, e ele me explicou um pouco sobre seu projeto, mas nunca entendi muito. Talvez quando perguntei fosse muito pequeno para entender. Meu pai também é um pouco reservado sobre sua história, então é algo que preciso investigar para entender mais. Talvez por causa dele, minha busca pelas ciências naturais se tornou mais especializada. Meu amor pela ciência tento transmitir aos meus filhos, é claro que não vou obrigá-los a seguir o mesmo caminho que eu tive. Quero que eles tracem o próprio caminho na vida, se forem felizes sendo artistas, músicos, médicos, advogados, professores ou qualquer outra coisa, também ficarei feliz. Mas acho que é um tipo de conexão quando mostramos aos nossos filhos coisas que gostamos, incluindo gosto musical, comida, hobbies e, no meu caso, também ciência. Toda centelha de curiosidade tento alimentar mais para que possa ter espaço para se expandir. Portanto, isso é uma coisa boa que provavelmente é com a ajuda do meu pai que comecei a ver o que queria ser.
Minha mãe, por outro lado, era uma pessoa que me ajudava às vezes a me acalmar quando eu estava triste com o mundo, especialmente quando tinha alguma chance de fazê-lo, quando não estava ocupada consigo mesma ou com outras coisas. Apesar disso, sinto que precisava mais da ajuda dela nesse sentido, aprendi algumas técnicas que pelo menos me trazem algumas lembranças e me ajudam a acalmar meus pequenos. Ainda canto a mesma música para dormir que ela costumava cantar para mim. Esse tipo de ação recria para mim um momento com minha mãe com meus filhos, e talvez crie uma memória com eles também.
Uma coisa que meus pais também me ensinaram foi como ter orgulho da minha cultura e origens. Isso também é algo que estou garantindo transmitir aos meus filhos. A história da minha família é um pouco sofrida na Europa antes de vir para o Brasil. Toda essa história familiar passou para mim e com certeza estou passando adiante para os meus filhos, para que saibam de onde vêm e qual é a identidade de sua origem.
É difícil analisar como meus pais contribuíram de maneira positiva para minha vida quando estou atualmente revisando quem sou e como meus pais criaram alguns problemas dentro de mim. No entanto, com um pouco de esforço, consigo encontrar coisas que atualmente entendo que são boas que eles me passaram e estou passando tudo isso também para os meus filhos. É difícil ser pai ou mãe e complicado filtrar todos os traumas e características que devemos melhorar de nossos pais. Mas ainda assim, nem tudo foi ruim.
