All our family, except my youngest daughter, sent 3 years ago our saliva to the 23andMe project. They give you back a report with some specific markers for some diseases, whether we have them or not. I remember seeing some cancer markers, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations, which are famous and Angeline Jolie had them. All of us didn't have any cancer predisposition, at least those that are known by these markers. But the most interesting finding was that my wife and I both have 2 different mutations that give predisposition to Celiac Disease. And my oldest daughter inherited both. My mom has Celiac disease by the way. Now imagine if we had the power to change these mutations when my daughter was a baby?
Not long ago, I discussed with some Hive fellows about a new gene editing methodology derived from the CRISPR/Cas9, which in a certain way brings hopes for single-nucleotide-associated rare genetic diseases. More and more humanity is going through this path that wants so badly to be able to edit human genomes as any other regular treatment based on chemical or biological molecules. But all the ethical problems I can't stop thinking about Gattaca movie. I see that only me plus 2 or 3 watched this movie so let me just give a brief summary:
We have basically one protagonist, born in a society that gene edition is normal, but at the time he was born his parents didn't have the money to pay the costs of removing all the diseases predisposition, so he was a regular human with all the chances of having lot's of problems in the future. Because of that, he suffered some prejudice and couldn't apply for an astronaut position because of all this genetic predispositions. But he met other person that was born with parents in better consutiins, so they could get the best embryo without any genetic concerns. But life is a mystery and his brother suffered a bad accident that made him stay in a hospital bed forever. The protagonist took advantage of this opportunity this other person urine, blood, and hair to create a dream position as an astronaut.
So the movie brings this problem, on one hand, people who can take advantage of this technology has also another important substance that provides them this advantage: money. So those with money can create genetically perfect babies and better jobs. In the other side, the poor who wouldn't access the technology and stay in bad jobs. If we think a bit more, we are almost reaching Hitler's dream of a perfect Arian race. That's where the big problem lies when a few have access to this technology. The other part of humanity would be put aside as always.
Yeah, it is kind of bad knowing in anticipation that you can have a certain disease or many of them. People can get some anxiety. Because of my father's cancer, my brother is anxious about himself, thinking that everything can cause him cancer. I take that as different. Ok we have celiac disease predisposition, including my daughter. Knowing that gives some advantage if one of us gets some symptoms. If we didn't know about this genetic background,d we would have to pass through tons of investigation after the first symptom since the celiac disease symptom is similar to cancer, Crohn's disease, colitis and any other bowel problems. Death is part of our cycle, as also our genetic problems; we need to deal with them and if the disease shows up we can see some ways to fight it.
Há pouco tempo, conversei com alguns colegas do Hive sobre uma nova metodologia de edição genética derivada do CRISPR/Cas9, que, de certa forma, traz esperanças para doenças genéticas raras associadas a nucleotídeos únicos. Cada vez mais a humanidade está trilhando esse caminho, desejando tanto poder editar genomas humanos como qualquer outro tratamento convencional baseado em moléculas químicas ou biológicas. Mas, com todos os problemas éticos, não consigo parar de pensar no filme Gattaca. Vejo que só eu e mais dois ou três assistimos a esse filme, então deixe-me fazer um breve resumo:
Temos basicamente um protagonista, nascido em uma sociedade em que a edição genética é normal, mas na época em que nasceu, seus pais não tinham dinheiro para pagar os custos de remoção de todas as predisposições a doenças, então ele era um ser humano comum com todas as chances de ter muitos problemas no futuro. Por causa disso, ele sofreu preconceito e não pôde se candidatar a uma vaga de astronauta devido a todas essas predisposições genéticas. Mas ele conheceu outra pessoa que nasceu quando seus pais eram ainda melhores, então eles puderam obter o melhor embrião sem quaisquer preocupações genéticas. Mas a vida é um mistério e seu irmão sofreu um acidente grave que o fez ficar em uma cama de hospital para sempre. O protagonista aproveitou a oportunidade para usar a urina, o sangue e o cabelo dessa pessoa para criar uma posição dos sonhos como astronauta.
Então o filme aborda esse problema: por um lado, as pessoas que podem tirar proveito dessa tecnologia também têm outra substância importante que lhes proporciona essa vantagem: dinheiro. Assim, aqueles com dinheiro podem criar bebês geneticamente perfeitos e empregos melhores. Por outro lado, os pobres que não teriam acesso à tecnologia e permaneceriam em empregos precários. Se pensarmos um pouco mais, estamos quase alcançando o sonho de Hitler de uma raça ariana perfeita. É aí que reside o grande problema, quando poucos têm acesso a essa tecnologia. A outra parte da humanidade seria deixada de lado, como sempre.
Sim, é meio ruim saber antecipadamente que você pode ter uma determinada doença ou muitas delas. As pessoas podem ficar ansiosas. Por causa do câncer do meu pai, meu irmão está ansioso consigo mesmo, pensando que tudo pode causar câncer nele. Eu encaro isso como algo diferente. Ok, nós temos predisposição à doença celíaca, incluindo minha filha. Saber disso nos dá alguma vantagem se um de nós apresentar alguns sintomas. Se não soubéssemos dessa herança genética, teríamos que passar por toneladas de investigação após o primeiro sintoma, já que os sintomas da doença celíaca são semelhantes aos do câncer, doença de Crohn, colite e quaisquer outros problemas intestinais. A morte faz parte do nosso ciclo, assim como nossos problemas genéticos; precisamos lidar com eles e, se a doença aparecer, podemos encontrar maneiras de combatê-la.
