This is my entry for The Ink Well Prompt #204: This week's prompt is: Hey, the line is back here!.
I hate waiting in line. But it was clear that the universe wanted to see me dying of boredom in an endless, long line again today.
Mom had asked me to buy her blood pressure medicine. She had warned me to get up early, as the pharmacy always had long lines. I reassured her I would get up early and be first in line before the pharmacy opened.
Unfortunately, the next morning when I got up, my watch read 9 am. I barely had time to brush my teeth and eat a banana for breakfast. By the time I reached the pharmacy, over ninety people were lined up. Damn!
The city had already woken up, the streets were full of passers-by and vehicles. The morning din of car horns and patrol car sirens was not long in coming. As usual, the line was full of elderly people. I took a glance at the entrance of the pharmacy. It was one of those long, narrow stores, with display cases full of medicines on the sides of the central aisle and cash registers at the back. I got a little closer and to my bad luck, out of the 3 cash registers, only one was working. The comments from anxious customers waiting for their turn outside were not long in coming.
“Hey, the line is back here,” shouted a man from somewhere in the long human line.
I nodded to calm the nerves of some old folks who were watching like eagles over the order of the line.
“There are always people who say they're just coming to look or ask questions and end up buying first before everyone else in line. They're so thoughtless, do they think their time is worth more than ours?” A couple of old ladies whispered as I walked past them. I pretended to be oblivious and kept walking.
I start looking for the end of the line, which curls and stretches a couple of blocks further. As I walk, I notice that among them are children, also young people, all of them glued to their cell phones. The elderly and other adults chat among themselves. Others, more practical, bring plastic chairs for their comfort as they endure the eternal wait. It's a maze of people of different sizes, builds, and ethnicities. I wonder why they can't stand in a completely straight line. Maybe it's my OCD, but it gives me a pain in my neck when I see the lines no longer straight.
Finally, I found the tail of the human snake. “Excuse me, sir. Are you the last one?”, I ask a tall, stick-thin gentleman whose hair was beginning to turn gray. His long, curved nose seemed to reach his chin. He pulled his pants up even higher, almost reaching his chest. He cleared his throat and gave me a suspicious look.
Then, suddenly, he blurted out, “No”
I tilted my head and furrowed my eyebrows, looking all around.
“Now you're last!” he exclaimed with a smile of completely even teeth. I'm sure they were false ones.
I gave a fake smile back out of politeness. It shocks me when people reply to such things. I always ask to know if there are other people in front of me. Generally, one encounters many kinds of individuals in the lines. Some say to others, “Please, can you hold my place? I have to do something urgent. I promise it's fast.” And as usual, one ends up agreeing out of politeness. These guys come back after three hours, just when it's their turn to buy. Don't you just hate that?
Although I don't know what's worse, saving their place or being surprised, just when it's your turn, a lady, or a gentleman shows up out of the blue, claiming they were behind the one who just bought. I hate waiting in lines.
The hours go by so slowly that it feels like time is running backward. There are already twenty people behind me. Fortunately, none of them have asked me to hold their place.
Suddenly, a peddler appears, one of those who carry four coffee carafes, firmly lined up on a magnificent, handcrafted wooden structure, which makes it easy to carry all of them. On its base, carved, is the word Carla. Hanging around her neck is a beautifully woven purse with three compartments; where she has candy, gum, and cigarettes. She is a slender girl; however, her triceps stand out from her arms, a product of continuously carrying the heavy scaffolding.
“Coffee, coffee,” she announces to the people in line with a smile. Some people wave to her, and she happily runs toward them. I join them too and wave my hand. The young woman manages to serve the diners. She pulls three tiny plastic cups out of a small, elongated bag tied to one side and quickly fills them by squeezing the top rim of one of the coffee carafes. The black liquid, which many are waiting for to awaken them from their lethargy, shoots out, filling each small container to the brim. The aroma of coffee ignites the spirits, bringing back memories. And as skillful as a juggler from some circus that died centuries ago, she delivers the coffees swiftly without spilling a drop.
I received mine and am aware that the steaming brew, which does not break the invisible barrier that keeps it five electrons away from the edge thanks to the laws of physics, must be red hot. The taste buds on the tip of my tongue disintegrate on contact. I’m sure it was brewed by Sauron's orcs, at Mount Doom in the dark and desolate land of Mordor.
I don't understand how the elders can drink the boiling coffee without even blowing on it first. The juggling girl pulls out a yellow sauce dispenser from the other side. “Sugar?” Two of the old folks crinkle their faces in refusal and, even though half a tongue has been pulverized by the black liquid that threatens to dissolve the plastic cup; I motion to her, to put some sweetener in mine. Quick as lightning, she tips the plastic container, giving it a gentle squeeze; it drops its contents without overflowing the coffee in my little plastic cup.
“You tell me when,” she warned.
“When,” I snap with a hint of desperation, seeing that it is inevitable that the coffee will overflow. Magically, the girl pulls out, I don't know from where, a wooden stick to stir the sugar that has settled to the bottom of the small plastic cup. Carefully, she moves it from one side to the other, maintaining a hypnotic rhythm that does not alter the harmony of the integrity of its contents. A feat I would applaud if my body were not paralyzed to ensure that no vibration breaks the charm and overflows the precious contents.
Soon it has ceased to be volcanic lava and its warmth lets me feel the bitter-sweetness that I usually enjoy in a good coffee. Maybe it is not the Gongfu Cha, ancestral Chinese cultural tradition of drinking tea; but I feel in harmony with the universe. It is just me and my coffee.
Time goes by, the sun begins to rage. Those who can take shelter in front of the cool entrance of a store that fortunately shields them from the ultraviolet rays as well as from the heat wave that begins to melt our hope of reaching our destination. Others, more cautious, brought an umbrella.
The line moves millimetrically, patient and parsimonious, like a large caterpillar crawling on the ground, shrinking and lengthening as someone leaves or arrives to take their turn inside it. At other times I have the impression that its movement is because one of us who is condemned to be part of it has passed away or lost his patience and left. A strong wind whips the clothes of the lucky ones who are a thousand meters from where I am, they cover their faces in a hurry before the dust lashes against them. The afternoon falls, and we continue to wait for our turn. Each step brings us closer to our destination. I no longer know how long I have been standing in this long wait. I have lost the meaning of my life. Some faint and collapse on the ground. Their bodies dissolve, eroded by the climatic conditions of the planet. We carefully pass over them, leaving a prayer for their souls and their failed attempts to reach their goals. The few of us who remain, like zombies, wander, wordless, in the silence of the night. Step by step in this eternal torture. The days go by, but I can still see that little fire in the eyes of the younger ones, who have not lost their hope of reaching the establishment’s entrance.
Alert to everything that happens. I warn from time to time those in front of me; who have forgotten the reason why they are standing in line, that they must continue and that every space they leave without walking is an opportunity to have reached our destination faster. At the end of the month, there are only a few centimeters left to reach our goal. The lifeless subjects behind me smile as they see that their wait has paid off, and we are one step away from reaching the pharmacy entrance. I inflict some words of encouragement to them to give their last effort: “A few more minutes, and we will be there”.
Finally, my feet manage to touch the entrance of the pharmacy, and the air conditioning caresses my body, relieving the heat outside. I breathe in the fresh air of the establishment. There is a chemical or disinfectant tinge, like that found in hospitals: Formaldehyde, alcohols, bitter acetaminophen, or perhaps ibuprofen. Hope in humanity is again reborn within me.
Inside there is a friendly staff assigning us a place in one of the lines behind the cash registers. Being in my new place, I am distracted by looking at the medicine shelves behind the glass. I remember that my anti-dandruff shampoo was about to run out. My eye is also fixed on a new toothbrush that claims to remove dental plaque with 90% effectiveness. It is curious that when it is my turn, the buying and selling transaction takes less than sixty seconds. And mathematically, it is not understandable why I have taken so long to get to where I am. Before I leave, I watch out of the corner of my eye as one of the girls, one of the staff who greeted me at the entrance, approaches one of the boxes and puts down a small piece of paper carefully folded in four. This happens in a matter of milliseconds. Carelessly, the cashier takes it and unfolds it, discovers a twenty-dollar bill inside, quickly closes it again, and leaves his post.
My mind began to concoct conspiracy theories and ideas as to why it had been so long waiting for my turn since I arrived in the morning. I glanced at my cell phone and my eyebrows immediately raised.
“Oops, look at the time! It's already noon!” I say without paying attention to the others waiting behind me. That explains why my stomach is rumbling so much. I must hurry home, surely mom must have made lunch.
I left the establishment behind and all the others who continued to wait for their turn behind me. Furthermore, I raise my fist in victory, and many of those who have not yet arrived celebrate my victory with a big round of applause.

Odio hacer cola. Pero era evidente que el universo deseaba verme nuevamente muriendo de hastío en una interminable y larga fila el día de hoy.
Mama me había pedido que comprara su medicina de la tensión. Me había advertido que me levantara temprano, ya que siempre se hacían largas colas en la farmacia. La tranquilicé diciéndole que me levantaría de madrugada y sería el primero en la fila antes de que abriera la farmacia.
Desafortunadamente, la mañana siguiente, cuando me levanté, mi reloj daba las 9 am. Apenas me dio tiempo para lavar mis dientes y comer un cambur de desayuno. Cuando logré llegar a la farmacia había más de 90 personas haciendo fila. ¡Maldicion!
Ya la ciudad había despertado, las calles estaban repletas de transeúntes y vehículos. El escándalo matutino de las bocinas de los autos y las sirenas de las patrullas no se hicieron esperar. Como era costumbre, la fila estaba llena de ancianos. Eché una mirada rápida a la entrada de la farmacia. Era una de esas tiendas alargadas y angostas, que tiene vitrinas llenas de medicinas a los costados del pasillo central y al fondo están las cajas registradoras. Me acerqué un poco más y para mi mala suerte, de las 3 cajas, solo había una funcionando. No se hizo esperar los comentarios de los clientes angustiados esperando por su turno en la parte de afuera.
¡Hey, la línea está aquí atrás!, gritó un hombre de algún lugar de la larga fila.
Asentí con mi cabeza para calmar los nervios de algunos ancianos que vigilaban como águilas el orden de la fila.
“Siempre hay gente que dice que solo viene a ver o preguntar y terminan comprando primero que todos los que están la fila. Son unos desconsiderados. ¿Acaso piensan que su tiempo vale más que el nuestro?” Cuchichearon un par de ancianas mientras pasaba frente a ellas. Me hice el desentendido y seguí caminando.
Comienzo a buscar el final de la fila, que se enrosca y se alarga un par de cuadras más allá. Mientras ando, observo que entre ellos hay niños, también jóvenes, todos ellos pegados a sus teléfonos móviles. Los ancianos y otros adultos conversan entre ellos. Otros, más prácticos, traen sillas de plástico para su comodidad mientras soportan la eterna espera. Es un laberinto de personas de distintos tamaños, contexturas y etnias. Me pregunto por qué no pueden hacer una fila completamente recta. Quizás es mi OCD, pero me produce un dolor en el cuello cuando veo que las filas dejan de estar en línea recta.
Finalmente, encuentro la cola de la serpiente humana. “¿Es usted el último?”, pregunto a un señor alto y delgado como una vara, cuyo cabello comenzaba a pintarse de gris. Su larga y curvada nariz parecía llegar a su mentón. Se subió aún más su pantalón, casi llegando a su pecho. Aclaró la garganta y me echó una mirada suspicaz.
Y, de pronto, soltó un “No”.
Incliné mi cabeza y arrugué mis cejas, mirando hacia todos los lados.
“Ahora usted es el último” exclamó con una sonrisa de dientes completamente parejos. Estoy seguro de que eran postizos.
Devolví una sonrisa falsa por educación. Me choca cuando las personas responden esas cosas. Siempre pregunto para saber si hay otras personas delante de mí. Generalmente, uno se encuentra con muchas clases de individuos en las colas. Están esos que les dicen a los otros: “Por favor, ¿puede guardar mi puesto? Debo hacer algo urgente. Le prometo que es rápido”. Y como de costumbre, uno termina aceptando por cortesía. Estos sujetos vuelven a las tres horas, justo en el momento que les toca su turno de comprar. ¿Acaso no odian eso?
Aunque no sé qué es peor, si guardarles el lugar o sorprenderse, justo en el momento que toca tu turno, aparezca una señora o señor, afirmando que estaban detrás del que acababa de comprar. Odio hacer filas.
Las horas transcurren tan lento que parece que el tiempo se devuelve. Ya hay veinte personas detrás de mí. Afortunadamente, ninguna me ha pedido guardar su lugar.
De pronto, aparece un vendedor ambulante, de esos que llevan cuatro termos de café, firmemente alineados en una estructura de madera, magnífica, con carácter artesanal; que le facilita cargarlos a todos ellos. En su base, tallada, está la palabra Carla. Lleva colgado de su cuello un bolso hermosamente tejido con 3 compartimentos; donde tiene caramelos, chicles y cigarrillos. Es una chica delgada; sin embargo, de sus brazos resaltan sus tríceps, producto de llevar continuamente el pesado andamio.
“Café, café”, anuncia a las personas de la fila con una sonrisa. Uno que otro le hace señas y felizmente corre hacia ellos. También me les uno y hago una señal con mi mano. La joven se las ingenia para servir a los comensales. Saca de una pequeña y alargada bolsa que lleva amarrada a un costado, tres diminutos vasos de plástico y los llena rápidamente con solo apretar el borde superior de uno de los termos. El líquido negro, que muchos esperan para despertar de su letargo, sale disparado llenando hasta el borde cada pequeño envase. El aroma del café enciende los ánimos, trayendo memorias. Y tan hábil como un malabarista de algún circo que murió hace siglos, entrega los cafés de manera veloz sin derramar una gota.
Recibo el mío y estoy consciente de que el humeante brebaje, que no rompe su barrera invisible que lo mantiene a cinco electrones de distancia del borde gracias a las leyes de la física, debe estar al rojo vivo. Las papilas gustativas de la punta de mi lengua se desintegran con su contacto. Evidentemente, fue elaborado por los orcos de Sauron, en el Monte del Destino (Mount Doom) en la tierra oscura y desolada de Mordor.
No entiendo como los ancianos pueden beber el café hirviendo sin siquiera soplarlo antes. La chica malabarista saca de otro costado un dispensador de salsas amarillo. “¿Azúcar?” Dos de los ancianos arrugan su cara para negarse y a pesar de que media lengua ha sido pulverizada por el líquido negro que amenaza disolver el vaso de plástico; le hago señas, para que ponga un poco de dulzor al mío. Veloz como un rayo, inclina el contenedor plástico, dándole una suave exprimida; este deja caer su contenido sin que se desborde el café de mi pequeño vaso.
“Me dice cuando”, advierte
“Cuando”, digo con un deje de desespero, al ver que es inevitable que se desborde el café. Mágicamente, la chica saca, no sé donde, una varilla de madera para revolver el azúcar que se ha depositado en el fondo del pequeño vaso de plástico. Cuidadosamente, lo mueve de un lado al otro, manteniendo un ritmo hipnótico, que no altera la armonía de la integridad de su contenido. Una proeza que aplaudiría de no tener paralizado mi cuerpo para garantizar que ninguna vibración rompa el encanto y desborde el preciado contenido.
Pronto ha dejado de ser lava volcánica y su tibieza deja sentir el amargo dulzor que suelo disfrutar en un buen café. Quizás no sea el Gongfu Cha, ancestral tradición cultural china de tomar té; pero me siento en armonía con el universo. Solo soy yo y mi café.
Así transcurre el tiempo, el sol comienza a arreciar. Los que pueden se resguardan frente a la entrada fresca de algún negocio que afortunadamente los cobija tanto de los rayos ultravioleta como de la onda de calor que comienza a derretir nuestra esperanza de llegar a nuestro destino. Otros, más precavidos, traen una sombrilla.
La fila se mueve milimétricamente, paciente y parsimoniosa, como una gran oruga que se arrastra en el suelo, encogiéndose y alargándose cuando se va o llega alguien a tomar su turno dentro de ella. Otras veces tengo la impresión de que su movimiento se debe a que, alguno de los que estamos condenados a formar parte de ella, ha fallecido o perdido su paciencia y se ha marchado. Un viento fuerte azota la ropa de los afortunados que están a mil metros de donde me encuentro, cubren su cara de prisa ante el polvo que arremete contra ellos. La tarde cae y seguimos a la espera de nuestro turno. Cada paso nos acerca a nuestro destino. Ya no sé cuanto tiempo llevo de pie en esta larga espera. He perdido el sentido de mi vida. Algunos desfallecen y se derrumban en el suelo. Sus cuerpos se disuelven, erosionados ante las condiciones climáticas del planeta. Con cuidado pasamos sobre ellos, dejando una plegaria por sus almas y sus intentos fallidos por alcanzar sus objetivos. Los pocos que quedamos, como zombis, deambulamos, sin decir palabra ante el silencio de la noche. Paso a paso en esta eterna tortura. Los días transcurren, pero aún puedo ver ese pequeño fuego en los ojos de los más jóvenes que no han perdido su esperanza de llegar a la entrada del establecimiento.
Alerta a todo lo que sucede, advierto de tanto en tanto a los que están delante de mí, y que han olvidado la razón por la que se encuentran haciendo fila, que deben continuar y que cada espacio que dejan sin caminar es una oportunidad de haber llegado más rápido a nuestro destino. Al final del mes, quedan pocos centímetros para llegar a nuestro objetivo. Los sujetos sin vida, que están detrás de mí, sonríen al ver que su espera ha dado fruto y estamos a un paso de llegar a la entrada de la farmacia. Les influyo unas palabras de aliento para que den su último esfuerzo: “Unos minutos más y estaremos dentro”
Finalmente, mis pies logran tocar la entrada de la farmacia, el aire acondicionado acaricia mi cuerpo aliviando el bochorno del exterior. Respiro el aire fresco del establecimiento. Hay un matiz químico o desinfectante, como el que se encuentra en hospitales: Formaldehídos, alcoholes, el amargo acetaminofén, o quizás ibuprofeno. La esperanza en la humanidad nuevamente renace dentro de mí.
A dentro hay un personal cordial encargado de asignarnos un lugar en una de las filas tras las cajas registradoras. Estando en mi nuevo lugar, me distraigo viendo los estantes de medicinas tras un vidrio. Recuerdo que mi champú anticaspa está por terminarse. Mi vista se fija también en un nuevo cepillo de dientes que asegura eliminar la placa dental con un 90% de efectividad. Es curioso que cuando toca mi turno, la operación de compra y venta transcurre en menos de sesenta segundos. Y matemáticamente no es comprensible el porqué he tardado tanto tiempo esperando llegar hasta donde me encuentro. Antes de marcharme, veo de reojo como una de las chicas, del personal que me recibió, se acerca a una de las cajas y deja un pequeño papel cuidadosamente doblado en cuatro. Esto sucede en cuestión de milisegundos. De manera descuidada, el cajero lo toma y desdobla, y descubre dentro un billete de veinte dólares, lo vuelve a cerrar rápidamente y abandona su puesto.
Mi mente comienza a confabular teorías conspiratorias e ideas de por qué había transcurrido tanto tiempo esperando mi turno desde que llegue en la mañana. Echo una mirada a mi teléfono móvil y mis cejas se levantan de inmediato.
“¡Uy! ¡Mira la hora! Ya van a ser las 12 del mediodía”. Digo sin prestar atención a los otros que esperaban tras de mí. Eso explica por qué mi estómago ruge tanto. Debo apurarme a llegar a casa, de seguro mamá debe haber hecho el almuerzo.
Dejo atrás el establecimiento y a todos los otros que continuaban esperando por su turno tras de mí. Levanto el puño en señal de victoria y muchos de los que aún no han llegado, celebran mi victoria con un gran aplauso.
