Hello everyone, and especially the SurfHive Community! It's Jasper, the musical-surfer dad from Cape Town in South Africa.
Why haven't I posted about surfing recently? Well just over a week ago I arrived in a small village in the French Alps with my father and met up with my sister Justine, who usually lives in Barcelona.
This would be the first holiday where I get to snowboard and ski in 8 years!
The best day for soft snow so far has been with my sister Justine who is quite decent on a snowboard, so I tend to snowboard with her! (It's currently snowing now so I hope for more good conditions on Tuesday maybe!)
Look at the amazing views - you just can't quite see the top of Mont Blanc because of the other impressive peaks in the way!
So how is snowboarding different from surfing? Well, on hard, prepared "pistes" that have been groomed by machines, or on icy snow, you tend to have to lean more forward, and use your front foot to catch an edge and initiate a turn, with your back foot sliding around and then catching its edge a few split seconds later.
On powdery soft snow, you can lean more backwards to make sure your nose doesn't dig into the snow, and it feels a lot more like the turns we do in surfing!
The other obvious difference is that you pay a lot of money in order to have cable-cars, chair-lifts and drag-lifts do all the work instead of paddling your ass off for 90% of the session!
You still have to wait your turn and show good manners similar to surfing when it comes to hitting a jump or other feature in the specially prepared "snow-park"

Another difference? Most snowboards have matching nose and tail... here is my nose...
And here is my tail in a mid 180 spin...
Back on the ground, currently riding switch (backwards) (you can see from my shadow how I'm filming with my camera on my helmet instead of in my mouth when I surf!)
And now I spin back around the other 180 degrees to face my correct natural (not goofy/switch/backwards) direction with my nose in front, ready for the next jump... I have just done the equivalent of a surfing frontside air reverse, but it was made much easier, for a mortal hacker like me, because the board is designed to go both ways!
Besides jumps, the park also puts in features like this box - the trick is to ride flat and not lean on your toes or heels!
I can ski about as well as I can snowboard. I would usually do this on the days I hang out with my dad (in blue), who was looking really good for his 76 years of age, and considering he also hadn't skied in over 7 years!
Unfortunately, on our second day skiing together, the weather got really bad and we were caught in a thick fog and were skiing nearly blind. My poor dad slipped on an icy patch and fell hard, with lots of pain, possibly breaking ribs near his backbone. He's a tough man, who used to be a famous mountaineer, so he managed to ski himself down to eventually ride the cable car out and go get painkillers, but he mustn't ski again this holiday (or probably ever unfortunately!).
How is skiing different? I think it's much easier to learn the basics (if you only have a week or so to have fun on your first ski holiday)! I have had one ski lesson compared to about a week of snowboarding lessons.
Just start by leaning forward and doing a pizza slice with your skis to apply brakes, and know that by leaning left you will go right (effectively you are leaning on the inside edge of your left ski) and vice versa. Eventually you can add style by bringing your skis more parallel, using your inside ski-pole to pivot around and almost hooking your outside arm around as you turn...
You'll eventually get good enough to get down all the prepared "pistes" which are graded green, blue, red and black in Europe. The next thing to challenge yourself, without going dangerously fast, is to tackle unprepared "off-piste" slopes like this one where you will have to navigate trees and rocks, changes in the snow texture from soft to icy, and lumpy moguls often created by everyone skiing the same line...
If you watch Winter X games, you should know that skiers can also enjoy these boxes and even more challenging rails similar to snowboarders and skateboarders...
And there's nothing stopping you from taking to the air either!
Some skis are even designed to be able to go backwards to set up or land impressive spinning aerials! I will leave that to the pros!
So, by this time next week I will be back in Cape Town and hoping to surf again! I hope you enjoyed some different scenery in the meantime!

¿Por qué no he publicado nada sobre surf últimamente? Pues hace poco más de una semana llegué a un pequeño pueblo de los Alpes franceses con mi padre y me encontré con mi hermana Justine, que vive habitualmente en Barcelona.
¡Estas serían las primeras vacaciones en las que puedo practicar snowboard y esquí en 8 años!
El mejor día para nieve blanda hasta ahora ha sido con mi hermana Justine, que es bastante decente en snowboard, ¡así que suelo practicar snowboard con ella! (¡Actualmente está nevando, así que espero que haya más condiciones buenas el martes tal vez!)
Mira las increíbles vistas: ¡simplemente no puedes ver la cima del Mont Blanc debido a los otros picos impresionantes en el camino!
Entonces, ¿en qué se diferencia el snowboard del surf? Bueno, en "pistas" duras y preparadas que han sido acondicionadas con máquinas, o en nieve helada, tiendes a tener que inclinarte más hacia adelante y usar el pie delantero para agarrar un borde e iniciar un giro, con el pie trasero deslizándose. y luego alcanzar su ventaja unas fracciones de segundo después.
En nieve polvo blanda, puedes inclinarte más hacia atrás para asegurarte de que tu nariz no se clave en la nieve, ¡y se parece mucho más a los giros que hacemos al surfear!
¡La otra diferencia obvia es que pagas mucho dinero para que los teleféricos, telesillas y telesillas hagan todo el trabajo en lugar de remar durante el 90% de la sesión!

¿Otra diferencia? La mayoría de las tablas de snowboard tienen nose y tail a juego... aquí está mi nose...
Y aquí está mi cola en un giro de 180 grados...
De vuelta en el suelo, actualmente montando switch (al revés) (¡puedes ver desde mi sombra cómo estoy filmando con mi cámara en mi casco en lugar de en mi boca cuando surfeo!)
Y ahora giro hacia atrás los otros 180 grados para encarar mi dirección natural correcta (no tonta/cambiar/hacia atrás) con mi nariz al frente, lista para el próximo salto... Acabo de hacer el equivalente a un surfing aéreo frontal. al revés, pero se hizo mucho más fácil para un hacker mortal como yo, ¡porque el tablero está diseñado para funcionar en ambos sentidos!
Además de los saltos, el parque también incluye características como esta caja: ¡el truco consiste en andar plano y no apoyarse en los dedos de los pies ni en los talones!
Puedo esquiar tan bien como hacer snowboard. Normalmente hacía esto los días que salía con mi papá (de azul), que se veía muy bien para sus 76 años de edad, ¡y considerando que tampoco había esquiado en más de 7 años!
Desafortunadamente, en nuestro segundo día esquiando juntos, el clima se puso realmente malo y quedamos atrapados en una espesa niebla y esquiábamos casi a ciegas. Mi padre pobre se resbaló en una zona helada y cayó con fuerza, con mucho dolor, posiblemente rompiéndose costillas cerca de la columna. Es un hombre duro, que solía ser un alpinista famoso, por lo que se las arregló para esquiar y finalmente tomar el teleférico e ir a buscar analgésicos, pero no debe volver a esquiar en estas vacaciones (¡o probablemente nunca, desafortunadamente!).
¿En qué se diferencia el esquí? ¡Creo que es mucho más fácil aprender lo básico (si solo tienes una semana para divertirte en tus primeras vacaciones de esquí)! He recibido una lección de esquí en comparación con aproximadamente una semana de lecciones de snowboard.
Simplemente comience inclinándose hacia adelante y haciendo un trozo de pizza con sus esquís para aplicar los frenos, y sepa que al inclinarse hacia la izquierda irá hacia la derecha (efectivamente, se está apoyando en el borde interior de su esquí izquierdo) y viceversa. Con el tiempo, puedes agregar estilo colocando tus esquís más paralelos, usando el bastón de esquí interior para girar y casi enganchando el brazo exterior mientras giras...

Lo siguiente que debe desafiarse a sí mismo, sin ir peligrosamente rápido, es afrontar pendientes "fuera de pista" no preparadas como esta, donde tendrá que sortear árboles y rocas, cambios en la textura de la nieve de suave a helada y a menudo se crean montículos llenos de bultos. por todos esquiando la misma línea...
Si ves los juegos de Winter X, debes saber que los esquiadores también pueden disfrutar de estas cajas y de rieles aún más desafiantes similares a los que practican snowboard y skate...
¡Y tampoco hay nada que te impida volar!
¡Algunos esquís incluso están diseñados para poder retroceder para colocar o aterrizar impresionantes antenas giratorias! ¡Eso se lo dejaré a los profesionales!
